An interesting counterpoint to the idea that a "GI Bill for Everyone" is a bad idea, from a veteran: https://buzzflash.com/articles/a-veterans-case-for-canceling-student-debt-and-making-higher-education-tuition-free

How exactly is this different from Bernie's proposal for tuition free public colleges and universities? It's the same completely reasonable idea.

Bernie suggested using the GI bill for everyone like she did?

If so, it would be the same.

Otherwise, his idea wasn't the same, and Omar is singling out the GI bill to water down the importance of US military service.

Since it clearly was not the same, the next logical step is to ask why Omar is targeting the GI bill and military service specifically. This isn't the first time she's done this. She also went after people serving, exaggerating how many are on food stamps to justify "free stuff", she tried to paint veterans as callous killers without regard for human life as a reason to ignore pleas for more service members serving in Congress. She's something alright, but the bottom line is, her intent is clearly to undermine the US.

Yes, that's exactly how I see it. I can see how using the phrase "GI Bill" could trigger some people, but the way I see it is that she's using it as shorthand for a similar idea to Bernie's.

Two words that mean something: Gavanized Iron.

ANYONE can get the GI bill.  It's very simple. But take note - it won't pay for much of a degree.

As a Marine that has been to Iraq just like this author, I completely disagree with him on this. The Montgomery and later on Post 9/11 GI Bill are great incentives for the services to help boost recruitment. It was one of the reasons I joined up in 2001 (before 9/11) because I knew my lower middle class parents couldn't afford for me to go to college and tbh I wasn't in the right mind to go to college at that time anyways.

So for Rep. Omar and this tool who wrote that OpEd want to downplay what it takes for people to get the GI Bill and what it means for us Veterans. It has helped countless people get up and out of their predicament to lead better lives for them and their families. I have used mine to help pay for my Bachelor's and my MBA. Which I wouldn't have been able to do as a full time employee, student, and father without the financial assistance that the GI Bill gave me.

All you got to do is serve your country to get free college. How about the idea of giving s back instead of just more free stuff

Why shouldn't all Americans have access to educational opportunities? I really don't mean to be disrespectful in any way to people who have served our country in the military, but why shouldn't more Americans get a leg up, particularly those who come from the working classes? We can do this for all of us, if those of us with more (and I am one who falls in that category) give a little more. I want us all to succeed. There are plenty of people for whom the military is not a realistic option -- why should the door be closed to them?

BTW, I don't like the use of "GI Bill" here at all. I just want to make that clear.

Fine but let them serve in some way. Why should citizen A earn  thiers thru Military service, job savings etc, and citizen B just be handed something for free

Yep, all the war mongering conservatives are so triggered that it's possible that kids won't need to risk their lives for imperialist wars in order to get free education.
