Ideas: In the Long Run, Romney Wins

It is a useful exercise to think about our current moment not from where we are, or even where we will be in five years, but where we will be in 50. Viewed from that perspective, the most important thing about the impeachment of Donald Trump will probably be Mitt Romney’s speech explaining his vote to convict the president of abuse of power.

In the near term, that speech will do neither Romney nor his cause any good. The armies of trolls and sneering louts will come after him, their jeers all the louder because they emanate from a terrified emptiness within. Shambling, tongueless, and invertebrate politicians who deep down know better will resent Romney for having the courage to say what they believed, but dared not utter.

But that speech will last. When future anthologies of great American political speeches are published by the Library of America, Romney’s remarks will be there. The language was American rhetoric at its best: not flowery and orotund, but clear and solid and stark.

Corrupting an election to keep oneself in office is perhaps the most abusive and destructive violation of one’s oath of office that I can imagine …

Does anyone seriously believe I would consent to these consequences other than from an inescapable conviction that my oath before God demanded it of me? …

With my vote, I will tell my children and their children that I did my duty to the best of my ability, believing that my country expected it of me.

He voted what he thought would keep him in office longest, period.  He lost the bet.  The side he chose lost.  Again.

He voted to convict a man who had not one shred of evidence of guilt in the matter fabricated by the dems.  Hope he gets what he deserves in the near future.  Vindman part deux.

Romney should be in the final year of his 8 year presidency.  He disappointed me and broke my heart in 2012.  He is just trying to cover for his own ineptitude.

I disagree with the article's author.  I believe Romney's vote came from his jealousy and resentment of Trump.......If he thought there was not enough evidence to convict without hearing from John Bolton a week before , then why did he vote to convict without Bolton's testimony?  I just don't see how an honest person can convict Trump based solely on hearsay with absolutely no first hand knowledge.....Romney is a bitter man, a never Trumper, and a sore loser.

From the zillions of commentaries that I've read about this, one recommendation stands out:  enjoy it when he votes correctly; ignore him when he doesn't; and quit making a big deal of the impeachment vote, because it had no impact on the outcome and simply doesn't matter.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

You've been watching too much MSNBC if you think that is a literal reference....

I have a very liberal "friend" on FB whom I have known for over 20 years.  Had no idea just how liberal he was until the past two or three years when he became vocal on FB.  Yesterday he was trying to convince me that the electoral process was unfair, that ALL votes should count.  And he predicts that Trump will lose again in 2020.
