Parents driving minivan across boarder with my belongings

Hi

I moved to NYC a few months ago from Ottawa. I have brought suitcases filled with my personal belongings but on a flight. My parents are going to drive from Ottawa to NYC and bring some of my other things that are more difficult to fly with; Dyson vacuum, a chair, boxes with kitchen supplies, pillows and bedding.

Does anyone have experience crossing the boarder while moving someone else’s personal belongings? I want to set them up so they can cross and don’t have any trouble. Is there someone I can call or what can I give them to help?

thanks

According to law , bringing goods for others is considered importation, must be declared and any tax liability paid.  Only returning residents and new immigrants are eligible for import tax exemptions... and must be either bringing the goods with them personally or have entered the US prior to the declared unaccompanied goods arriving

You need  to provide them with the correct paperwork

and inventory to accompany the goods

If they run into the wrong border guard, they are going to be in for a nasty surprise. As stated above, it is considered importing and it comes with it own set of rules and regulations. If they don't declare it and it is found anyway, we can now add smuggling to the list and we have now entered the world of federal offenses.

Lot's of people do it and get away with it. Personally I would not do it and cannot recommend it.
