One of the largest hospital systems in the state, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, are specially equipped and designated to treat highly infectious viruses, like Ebola, that can have devastating consequences around the globe.

But if the latest epidemic identified by World Health Organization, a new coronavirus, that first arose in China makes its way to Johnson County, treatment would look very different than that of a disease like Ebola.

Treatment for the disease might not need to take place at the hospital. [...]

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

It looks like CDC is really close on a vaccine, that is remarkable turn around.

I have heard reports saying a potential vaccine could take months.  This one appears to be the most promising.

A few months then they proceed to clinical testing. Theoretically they can speed that up, but then you would have to evaluate the risk of a poorly tested vaccine vs the risk of contracting the virus. It's also possible they can get to that point and find out the vaccine doesn't really work very well. Hopefully it all goes well. There seems to have been a lot of progress with a SARS vaccine and then it was shelved when the epidemic ended before doing any trials. They may be farther along than they normally would be at this point.

I generally don't want to be among the first group of people taking a vaccine. Right now I wouldn't even take it unless I was travelling to the endemic areas or working in a area with a high risk of exposure. If it does move to the point where they consider it a pandemic, I would probably make a decision at that time.

Whatever the time frame is, we probably have to take estimates from these articles with a grain of salt. IMO, we are getting wildly varied estimates because we can't really get more than that at this time. I think the more optimistic estimates are hoping that the existing work on the SARS vaccine can be adapted. There is no guarantee that it will. The longer ones assume starting from square one.

Personally, I don't want to be a downer but I don't actually expect they are going to have a lot of luck with these vaccines in the long run. Just the nature of corona virus. I am hoping they can come up with something that is effective in the short term that can help to control the spread of the virus. Just like SARS and MERS, I think the bigger goal should be to prevent the virus from getting established in human populations.

Gilead is producing for the most part pretty much all of the drugs that have shown good success against coronavirus, including some drugs that had already experimentally failed against Ebola, and a cocktail of drugs used for Hep and HIV. It makes me wonder with the increased demand if that will put a strain on obtaining them for HIV patients worldwide. I seriously don't expect there to be a vaccination any time soon.
