AOS interview requirements

My wife’s friend’s appointment for AOS interview letter says to bring (among other things) a completed affidavit of support (I-864) with a letter from current employer stating rate of pay and average weekly hours...

My wife received her combo card recently and we are expecting an appointment letter for her AOS interview soon. 
Questions:
1) Will the employer letter submitted with the I-485 be sufficient, or will I need another (for the 3rd time) verification of employment letter?

2) How important is it to be employed at the time of the AOS interview? I’ve been a teacher for 31 years and I’m planning to retire at the end of this school year in June.

1) The existing employment letter is probably still fine.

 

2) Technically, the existing I-864 is valid even if your circumstances change. However, if the CO learns of a job change (it's not uncommon for them to ask what you do for a living) that may impact your ability to be a qualified sponsor, they can request a new one.

If you have no job at that time, you would need to qualify via other sources of income, via assets, or via a joint sponsor.

1) the letter of employment you have is probably fine if it’s dated within the last 6 - 12 months, however I’d recommend adding some pay stubs to show you’re still employed. 

2) at time of AOS all factors will be taken into account, if you’re no longer employed they may request a revised affidavit or a joint sponsor, especially with the new public charge rules

Take, to the interview, evidence of the income you will have after you retire - Social Security statement, evidence of a pension, income from investments...

If this income is over the required 125%, it should suffice without your needing a joint sponsor, especially if it's not just above that amount. You may not need a new I-864, but it wouldn't hurt to have one with you, just in case. Good luck with your interview!

What is the I-864 definition of a dependent for calculating family size? Are children not living with me, over 18 and graduated from high school dependents?

You may exclude any unmarried children under 21 years of age, if these children have reached majority under the law of their place of domicile and you do not claim them as dependents on your Federal income tax returns.

They are over 18 and may or may not be under the age of majority where they reside (i.e. their state if in the US). Most states have this at age 18 I believe, but some may be up to age 21.

 

If you claim them as dependents on taxes, they must be counted either way.

My retirement income and assets should more than sufficient. If they are going to require a joint sponsor that will be a problem. I may have to work for another year.
