Name Change on Green Card Before Filing I-130 for spouse

Hi all,

I've been looking all over the forum for an answer to this question - and short of actually going to an immigration attorney - I'm hoping someone here maybe has an answer:

I'm a LPR and recently got married, now currently waiting on the marriage certificate in hand so I can finally submit our application. I have a list of gov't/places I need to contact to change my name. I know I can use the marriage certificate as proof of name change (I plan to hyphenate) but, do I need to change my permanent resident card before I submit the I-130? Or can I submit the application using the A-number and photocopyof card and request the name change during? I'm trying to get as many of my ducks in a row for when we submit to avoid getting a RFE or other setbacks.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

You can file using your maiden name .. this will match your passport .. and the marriage certificate us always your link between maiden and married name

Your GC won’t  be changed during this process unless you paid for a name change and new card. IMO.. not worth it

Did you change your name on the marriage cert? If so, you'll more than likely have to change your name everywhere first.

you can file with your maiden name, thats what I did because I was advised to wait til citizenship to change my name (it was the easiest way). if you change your name before filing,  its an added cost to change it on your greencard, which I think you might have to do first.

It'll be easier to file in your maiden name, so all your documents match and then wait till either closer to the end of the process to change your name or wait til hubby comes up to do it

Yea, we got married in Jamaica, RGD wrote it as MyFirstName HisLastName. I'm literally waiting on him to mail me the cert so I can update my SSN. I dunno why I thought it would help to file hyphenated. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I'm planning to apply for naturalization in the next couple years, would prefer to just change everything then.

yeah you're probably gonna have to do all the changes first. either that, or get it changed at RGD and file with your maiden name. either way its added time and money
