My wife's son had his interview on 01/28 and IO said everything was in order and his visa was approved. They said the visa should be ready in a couple days.

His status used to be "Ready" and now is it reads "Application Received".

It's been a week and nothing has changed.

What could be the hold up? I know it's only a week, but the status should have changed by now 🤷‍♂️

Some visa applications require further administrative processing, which takes additional time after the visa applicant’s interview by a consular officer. Applicants are advised of this requirement when they apply. Most administrative processing is resolved within 60 days of the visa interview. When administrative processing is required, the timing will vary based on the individual circumstances of each case.  You can check the status of your visa application on ceac.state.gov.  Please visit Visa Status Check Online (CEAC Status Check): Immigrant Visa and K visa for details.

The important item to watch are the dates. If they are changing then the visa issuance is moving along. You just need a little more patience.

Did the case status also change to nonimmigrant?

YMMV

No, it hasn't changed. We are going to run into problems. We saw everyone else get their visas in 1-2 days when we went through our interview.  We never expected this delay, as he is just an "add on" K2. My wife and her daughter already received their Green Cards. We have return tickets and his time to enter the USA is running out.  🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Every case stands on it own. When you received your visa maybe the embassy was in a lower work load and could produce your's much faster then now. You are advise of the AP throughout the paperwork and many of the websites especially your embassy (see information taken directly from your embassy website) that you should not make plans, purchase airline tickets, quit your job or anything else that impede you during this time. Their is an old saying "lack of planning on your part doesn't constitute and emergency on my part". I'm sorry but it's a dose of reality. You'll have it in a few days and he/she will be on their way to your loving arms and all will be forgotten. I wish safe travels.

Important information about the interview and visa:

  • We cannot guarantee, before your documents are seen by the Consul, that your visa will be approved and issued.  Only after your interview will the Consul make that decision. We do not encourage you to make any final travel arrangements, sell your properties or quit your job before your visa is issued.
  • This Office will do its best to process your visa as soon as possible, but you will most likely have to spend the entire morning in this Office until the Consul can make a final decision on your request. If any problem is detected, it is possible that you may have to return to this Office again.
  • If your case is approved your passport and visa will be delivered to you according to the choice you made when you scheduled your appointment.  For any questions related to the passport delivery please contact CSC.
