Loose and Lose

Oh talking about English. I have trouble to pronounce some words. I can't make it right for some words for example ; "sheet" and "sh!t". Couple days ago Dan taught me the right way to pronounce "Cutlery". Took 2 days to to get it right.

Bear is "bare" but Hear is "heer"

Cow is "kowwwwww" but Mow is Moe

The accent is awesome though.

Lose/loose is annoying.

Fiance/fiancee is also annoying. It's one e for a man, two for a woman.

Its/it's, your/you're, and there/their/they're are obvious ones.

One mistake I've noticed, from educated professionals and even people who claim to be teachers, is 'definately'. THERE IS NO 'A' IN DEFINITELY.

Yeah I've decided not to ever try to say sheet again, because it really sounds like sh!t. Sheep and ship is not a problem, I don't use those words here at work, but I'd love to be able to pronounce sheet, so every time I have to use this word I don't have to think of a similar word instead, since I'm afraid of people's reaction when I say sheet

I'm no grammar guru (LisaD can attest to this) BUT, I see soooo many people mistaking loose for lose.

So I thought I'd post this in hopes that maybe this might stick.

Loose - (here's what this REALLY means)

1. free or released from fastening or attachment: a loose end.

2. free from anything that binds or restrains; unfettered: loose cats prowling around in alleyways at night.

4. not bound together: to wear one's hair loose.

5. not put up in a package or other container: loose mushrooms.

6. available for disposal; unused; unappropriated: loose funds.

7. lacking in reticence or power of restraint: a loose tongue.

Lose - (this is the word that you SHOULD be using)

1. to come to be without (something in one's possession or care), through accident, theft, etc., so that there is little or no prospect of recovery: I'm sure I've merely misplaced my hat, not lost it.

2. to fail inadvertently to retain (something) in such a way that it cannot be immediately recovered: I just lost a dime under this sofa.

3. to suffer the deprivation of: to lose one's job; to lose one's life.

4. to be bereaved of by death: to lose a sister.

5. to fail to keep, preserve, or maintain: to lose one's balance; to lose one's figure.

6. (of a clock or watch) to run slower by: The watch loses three minutes a day.

7. to give up; forfeit the possession of: to lose a fortune at the gaming table.

8. to get rid of: to lose one's fear of the dark; to lose weight.

I am surprised that no one has brought this up yet. I can't stand when people/companies spell things incorrectly ON PURPOSE. Especially big time companies. "Nick at Nite" and all the Drive-Thru restaurants. No wonder people have a hard time spelling, it's incorrect in advertising all around them.

It's not very nice to make fun of a non-native speaker though; it's kind of cruel. I think what the OP was complaining about was native speakers making such simple mistakes over and over again.

Another one that bugs me, apart from the obvious ones already mentioned: Then and than. I see tons of people using then, when it should actually be than!
