Driving while waiting for AOS

Hi. I heard I’m not allowed to apply for a drivers license while waiting for AOS, and thus, not able to drive. Is this true?

If that’s true, I have an international drivers license that I’ve used before to drive in the US, Canada, etc. Can I use that?

I’m not planning on buying or leasing a car. But my fiancé and I plan on taking a few road trips, and she doesn’t drive. So I was hoping I can rent a car and drive for our trips after we get married on our K1.

50 possible answers as motor vehicle rules are state dependant.   Your state DMV website should be the best place for the answer

YMMV

It depends on which state you are living in. Some require an EAD before they will issue a driver’s license. Some don’t. Each state has its own rules.

An international driver’s license is a translation of an overseas license. You won’t be able to use an overseas license here once you become a resident of the state where you live. Those are for people here on vacation.
