We were able to reschedule my husband's interview for Feb. 27th. I'm trying to gather the paperwork, and wondered about the IRS Transcripts. On their website, they say it takes 2-3 weeks after filing taxes to then request a transcript. That's cutting it close for us, and I know its in the middle of tax season so Im probably not the only one who hasn't done taxes yet (intend to tomorrow though.)

My question is, when the consulate asks for the most recent year of IRS transcripts, do you think they would take the 2018 year seeing as we are in a time zone where 2019 might not be finished filing yet? I could also include the tax returns for 2019, but maybe that would just be confusing rather than helpful and informative.

You don’t have to file until April 15 so the previous year would be acceptable. You should be able to download that from the IRS website very quickly.

Timeline in brief:

I-130 filed: February 5, 2016

NOA1: February 8, 2016 Nebraska

POE: December 19, 2016 Las Vegas

I used the previous year 2018 since I haven't filed mine for 2019 yet and btw, it's easy, just go to their website and register and you can actually download everything from their website on IRS.  You can see your tax account, tax records, tax transcripts and all and it's super easy.  All your tax reports are on there.  As for my last year's income, I used my year-end tax report from my employer and that should be fine too.  So I gave my spouse my year-end tax report from 2019 and previous 2018 IRS transcript.  They pretty much only accept the one from IRS Transcript since it's the only legit source, imo.

Keep in mind that if you are unable to get them online, the IRS will use the cheapest mailing option available. I waited for over 6 weeks to receive our transcripts in Germany.

I had the same problem is it because were abroad? It wont let access my transcripts online either. Im in Sweden and i sent out my request for transcripts in July 2019 and got it in mid January 2020

I almost had a heart attack reading these until I realized it was because it was international. But that does kind of lead me into my next question. Our application was approved at the end of November 2019. I have since been laid off my remote job and came back to the US to job hunt, living with my parents (who will help me sponsor financially now that I'm unemployed.)

So in my I-864, I'm putting my US address instead of our Mexico address as my current address, and thought I would explain these chain of events in the letter explaining my domicile. Had anyone else ever had to do anything similar and have any tips?

You should use your US Address.   Since you are in the US there is nothing to explain about the domicile, unless you want to cover yourself if you are accompanying your spouse at CDJ.

If you do get the 2019 return done just take a copy to the interview.

So, I have just tried to set up an online account with the IRS so I can download my transcripts to use for applying for our IR1, but it seems to be pretty impossible if you live abroad. I filed taxes for 2018, but by mail as my husband was an NRA.  The IRS account setup asks for my name, SSN and the last address I filed taxes from.  But it won't seem to take my British address and just gives me the error that "The information you entered does not match our records. Please verify your information and try again."  I also tried the last address I lived at in the States, but no luck with that either. Am I really doomed to waiting 8+ months for them to send me my transcripts by mail?  Anybody living abroad had any luck getting their transcripts in a sensible amount of time?

I think you can also send a copy of your tax return instead of an IRS transcript. You could read the I-864 instructions again to be sure, but I'm pretty sure that was an option.

I'm pretty sure you can't get them online if you filed with an address outside of the US. Is it by any chance possible that your UK address is formatted differently in the IRS system?

We had to have our transcripts send via regular mail, which took about 6 weeks.

Thanks for the feedback, that's very helpful.  Six weeks is not too bad as we're only in the early stages of waiting for NOA2 on our I-130.

I did wonder if it would be faster to request them to be sent to my parents' house in the States and they could send them to me in some kind of express fashion (or even scan them and send them to me electronically) but wondered if the IRS have a problem sending them somewhere that isn't my current address.

We ordered them after submitting our I-130 and received them with plenty of time to spare before we sent in packet 3.

I do believe they will only send them to the address on file (i.e. the address on your tax return) but I'm not 100% sure. Part of the reason why we couldn't get ours online was because we didn't have a US mobile phone with our name on the account. If you have that, I would give it a try.

I might have a go and phoning the IRS and seeing if it's possible to have the transcript sent somewhere else, but I have pretty low expectations.

I don't have a US mobile phone with my name on the account either, but the IRS website did give me the option of sending me the verification info in a letter, so I was going to give that I try, but then it didn't matter because it couldn't match my address.  Things I wish I had known before I left the States!

Good luck! Worst case, have them sent via regular mail. Again, ours took about 6 weeks during the holiday time period. Hopefully you'll get them quicker at this time of the year.
