Murkowski comes out against impeachment witnesses, putting Trump on path to acquittal

Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski came out Friday against calling witnesses in President Trump’s impeachment trial, all but assuring the Senate will move to wrap up proceedings with a likely acquittal in a matter of days, if not hours.

Given the partisan nature of this impeachment from the very beginning and throughout, I have come to the conclusion that there will be no fair trial in the Senate. I don’t believe the continuation of this process will change anything. It is sad for me to admit that, as an institution, the Congress has failed,” said Murkowski, a key moderate senator who has been closely watched on the witness question.

The announcement came after Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., who also had been on the fence on the issue, announced late Thursday that he would not support additional witnesses in Trump's "shallow, hurried and wholly partisan” trial.

Right now, Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Mitt Romney of Utah are the only GOP senators to signal support for witnesses. Presuming Democrats vote as a bloc and no other Republicans defect, this would leave the pro-witness side with just 49 votes.

The Senate is expected to vote on the witness question later Friday. From there, proceedings could drag on through Friday night and into the weekend – and possibly beyond – but it takes a two-thirds supermajority to convict a president.

I think they just started the session in the Senate, which is 4 hours, so the vote on additional witnesses (extending this) will be around 5pm Eastern if it directly follows.

The only question at this point is if Schumer will throw tantrums like he did at the beginning and toss out a slew of amendments to try and delay the vote on articles, for which Mitch might force the Senate to be in session into Friday night/Saturday morning to get it done.

Conveniently, the NY Times also came out with another *ahem* "scoop" on Bolton this morning.

Naturally, the House managers immediately cited this NYT article, with in seconds of beginning their Senate floor speech, to try and shame Senators to changing their minds.

So glad this is coming to an end.

It was being said across all news media, by alleged "insiders", that even Democrats were getting tired of this, Schumer was getting boatloads of pressure from people in Congress, whether Presidential candidates in the Senate, or House members who support them, to just get this over with so people can get to fundraising/campaigning.  😂

As to the bold part:  Do you seriously think they will wait until February to start the next impeachment?

As to the pic: Did you obtain a Certificate of Almighty Reusage Eligibility (CARE) prior to posting it?  If not, please PM NB2 ASAP.

This matter should never have made it to the Senate in the first place.....The Dems have failed miserably in their weak attempt to overthrow a legally elected POTUS.    Nancy said that any impeachment must be bi-partisan.......it wasn't.........
