Can someone please explain to me why people say you need to order a tax transcript from the IRS? Doesn't a 1040 along with my W2 and/or 1099 relay the same exact information as an IRS transcript without the hassle of ordering and waiting for documents to come in the mail? I just read from the majority of people on VJ to go the tax return transcript route but don't explain much on the reasoning behind it. Why?? I am confused.

Tax transcripts are less paperwork.......in addition, tax transcripts reflect what was actually filed and received by the IRS.  Tax returns only reflect what a person "says" they filed.........

Transcripts are more and more often being the required evidence being requested by the consulate

Also, who said mail is the only delivery method?  I downloaded 3 years of transcripts in 5 minutes.

Thank you for this. Is it not suggested to send only 1040, w2, 1099 (rather than IRS transcripts)? Will this result in a K1 visa not being issued? I'm asking because my P3 instructions (AUS) just say I need a copy of last income federal tax return filed (doesn't specify if I need a transcript or not unless I am just not comprehending it fully). My subforum isn't very active nor have I been responded when asking a question over there, so I am reaching out in this related thread.

I'll clarify - IRS website states I have to wait for a code in the mail (5-10 calendar days) so I can continue with activating my account before I order transcripts. Assumed that was the standard protocol for everyone.

I didn’t have to wait for any code when ordering mine... not sure the reason however
