So is tomorrow UK Independence Day?

Brexit Is Discrediting the EU

David Cameron said that Brexit risked war. “Can we be so sure that peace and stability on our Continent are assured beyond any shadow of doubt?” he asked. “Is that a risk worth taking? I would never be so rash as to make that assumption,” he answered.

But that’s hardly the most extravagant prophecy. European Council president Donald Tusk said the risks were much worse than war, “As a historian” he said, “I fear Brexit could be the beginning of the destruction of not only the EU but also Western political civilization in its entirety.” One is tempted to answer that a civilization that can’t survive an alteration to a 40-odd-year political arrangement isn’t worth saving. But why grant the premise?

This month the International Monetary Fund, normally a staunch friend of the EU, released its economic forecasts, which put the U.K.’s growth ahead of Germany’s and the eurozone’s. It doesn’t quite sound like civilizational destruction to me.

Also, has anyone noticed that in fact the Brexit result strengthened traditional parties and quieted the populist ones in the United Kingdom? Perhaps there are lessons for other European countries. While everyone was predicting certain doom and political unrest as punishment for the United Kingdom, it is France that has been rocked by massive protests and afflicted with a terribly unpopular and illiberal government.

Nigel has it right:

Fitting that in his last speech, the authoritarians prove him right again.

- The EU isn't just undemocratic, it's anti-democratic

- Attracts powermongers without accountability

- Nations > supranational bodies

After Nigel said he hated the experiment the EU had become, and made it clear he's talking about the union itself and loves the European people, after he was cut off, the clown at the front made sure to virtue signal about the term "hate" in a context entirely irrelevant to Nigel's usage. Glad for the Brits this is finally coming to an end, just hoping plenty of other countries get out too.

Lost here:

"And you may loathe populism, but let me tell you a funny thing.. it's becoming very popular."

"No more Guy Verhofstadt"

I'll be having a drink to a free UK.

Independence Day is tomorrow.

Would have preferred it at a warmer time of the year.

Well, technically the US celebrates Independence Day on the day the Declaration was ratified by the Second Continental Congress, not the day we Independence was actually achieved at the end of the Revolutionary War.  Using that same logic, UK Independence Day from the EU would be June 23, 2016.

I guess if you are a German citizen and a criminal in the UK, you should make your way to Germany.

Brexit: What will change after Friday, 31 January?

7. Germany won't extradite its citizens to the UK

It won't be possible for some suspected criminals to be brought back to the UK if they flee to Germany.

Germany's constitution does not allow its citizens to be extradited, unless it's to another EU country.

"This exception cannot apply any more after the UK has left EU," a spokesman from the German Federal Ministry of Justice told BBC News.

It's unclear if the same restrictions will apply to other countries. Slovenia, for example, says the situation is complicated, while the European Commission was unable to provide comment.

The UK Home Office says the European Arrest Warrant will continue to apply during the transition period. (That means Germany will be able to extradite non-German citizens.)

However, it adds that if a country's laws prevent extradition to the UK it "will be expected to take over the trial or sentence of the person concerned".
