Those days are long gone.

Consider how many horrific attacks there have been in USA embassies and consulates in the past 50 years.  The State department has said enough is enough.

Really, I haven't read any indignant posts of US citizens being refused entry to consulates.

I think what he is referring to is that things are not the same in terms of easy access to Embassy/Consulate entry, even for American citizens. Appointments are even needed for American Citizen Services units, except for true emergency situations (victim of a crime, stolen passport, etc) -- and even then, it might not be easy.  The days of walking up to the Embassy door, showing your US passport, and quickly getting admitted, are a thing of the past.

Just use the word "Emergency" and they will accommodate or someone will come out and schedule you.

It been a while since I have been to any of the "stans" but last time I was at ISL, I was told to arrive 2 hours ahead and got the full TSA check and pat down.

OP: you cousin cannot get an appointment at ACS and they specifically state that visa/green card issues are checked at CEAC.  There is nothing that can be done about AP.

When you try to make an appointment in U.S. Citizen Services, they clearly state that you cannot come to inquire about visas. Sorry. :(

I wanted to visit the embassy as well, but since they stated that, I decided not to go.

Makes sense.  Otherwise, the embassy would be mobbed and they would be unable to deal with the people who have actual appointments.

I checked my old consulate website and indeed this is the case there too now - so it’s sometime in the last 5 years it’s changed (they have a phone number for emergencies and appointments for everything else). So apologies for prior suggestion based on outdated practice

“Return to the shuttle bus” sounds so dismissive, lol.
On another point, pretty nice captive business to own when the embassy makes you take a private fee paying shuttle to see them...

Presumably they carry out the security check in a remote location?

Correct. I went to the embassy in Baghdad and from the first entry point you can't even see the building. Your ID and appt letter get verified before you are allowed on a bus. You drive a couple of minutes, then everyone off the bus for security checks and K9 walks around your bags. From there, back on the shuttle which drives you to the security gate of the embassy for additional checks. It varies by location and Embassy (in Germany you just walk up to the gate with security check).
