this varies from embassy to embassy. For K3 I only had to have 1 year (Germany). But I believe some others require 3 years. Call your embassy and ask them or go to a region specific forum and ask others from your country

Thanks for your help. One more question. I'm reading the affidavit of support i-134 form. It says:

B. Statement of your employer on business stationery,

revealing:

1. Date and nature of employment;

2. Salary paid;

3. Whether the position is temporary or permanent.

C. If self-employed:

1. Copy of last income tax return filed; or

2. Report of commercial rating concern.

Does that mean you don't have to show your last income tax return only if you're self-employed and just have this information from your employer?

Again varies by consulate, since the K-visas are handled by the immigrations unit of the consulate, they tend to require the same income evidence attached to the I-134 as what is used by the I-864 for immigrant visas, so they tend to require IRS returns, and accept employer letter and pay stubs as optionals.

We got K-Visa through Guangzhou China, and the letter sent to fiancee, did indicate what financial evidence they prefer, and IRS return was at the top of the list.

In our case this what the I-134 included.

  • I-134 signed and notarized.
  • Tax transcripts from the IRS for past 3 years, (Redundant for the (1040,W2,1099) but are free from the IRS
  • Photo copy of IRS form 1040, and W2s for past 3 years
  • Letter from my employer stating annual salary, job responsibility, and that is full time, on company letterhead.
  • Photo copies of past 6 months pay stubs up to a few weeks before the interview

You can get Tax Transcripts from the IRS for free.

I'm pretty sure this has been asked but I can't find the answer. Do I have to show that I made enough money to support my wife from the last year alone or is 3 years required? Thanks.

Technically, the answer is neither. The place you declare an annual income on the I-134 and I-864 asks for "a current annual income of...." It is acceptable to annualize your income from a job you started recently, even if you were a student with no income the prior three years. I would declare what is, in truth, most beneficial for you and then document it accordingly. Documenting current income is done with pay stubs and employer letter. You should also either include at least the most recent tax return or cite IRS regulation that says you weren't required to file. In the case of zero income in the last tax year, you need only say you didn't file because you had no income. No need to look up the IRS regulation.
