Hi @Greenbaum I want change my last name with my fiance's. But if we apply for ssn before marriage. How difficult its going be, to change my last name in SSN?

Very difficult after your marriage as they will tell you that you have to wait till you have completed AOS. That's why it's better to do it with your maiden name before the marriage and then once you are married return with the necessary documents (refer to their website for this information) and change your name.

I'm glad he made it to your arms. BTW, the immigration agent was giving him a test on the wife/fiancé answer. Since your fiancé chose the correct answer he was on his way to you. If he had answered wife, he would have been on his way back home.

Next steps are to get an SSN before you marry. It will save you a lot of headaches after the marriage. Also, to view the AOS process use the "guide" tab in the blue ribbon at the top of this page and seek out AOS. Good luck and stay engaged.

So am I😍 Thank you!! I figured so too he said they were just soo flustered trying to find his packet.

Can I ask what is the difference of applying for your social now vs after? We were looking to get legally married asap so we can file AOS and hopefully visit his family this summer. Would filing for an SSN now cause us to have to wait to file AOS? Not sure how long that process takes. EDIT: Oops just seeing your link above reading that now!

Thank you for all your help!

How are these steps changed with Covid?

Our Federal offices are CLOSED to anyone without an "appointment" and there seems to be no way to GET an appointment without mailing his passport (supporting documentation) and I don't trust sending his passport in the mail!

SSN does not prevent you from going forward with AOS. They have nothing to do with each other. But if you want to comingle your assets like bank accounts, charge cards and the like all banks ask for a social security number. The demonstration of the comingling of assets is part of AOS. I explained the process in the PDF and for additional help the link to the thread that has a conversation on this topic. Both are good reads if you want to know why and how it works. Refer to the post above for the links.

Hi to all experts,

Some Indian k1 Visa applicants have managed to book an appointments. Some have received pcket4  ( before covid,-cancelled interviews  ) some didn't receive packet4. Now confusion are BOOKED INTERVIEWS valid to attend? ( all have got  appointment automated confirmation email) Some fresh applicants (ready since March and April) are able to even finish biometric .

Should all get email from embassy, some have tried to Email they all got different replies.

Thanks

We got the visa on Monday (technically it was ready last Saturday but they didn't let us know 😥 ), and flew out from Seoul that night!  We've been here now for a few days and still trying to get a new place and figure out wedding and other things.  So much to do so little time!  But we are so happy to have this big step completed!

We are also trying to figure out how to get a SSN without sending in their passports.

Are you not doing this in person? They will not keep your documents so the thought of that happening is not true. Best place to start is here.

Our SSA office in Portland  is closed for Covid and only open by appointment.   You have to call the office directly, get their fax # and fax copies of the documents to prove you have everything they require (properly filled out application for an original SS#, passport id page, Visa page in passport,  and I94 - proof of legal entry to US, that is stapled into his passport) and then they are supposed to call to set up an appointment.

We have just done this and waiting for their call.

Yes, we have to do it in person and we called to make an appointment.  They put us on the list.  It will be 30-40 days wait for an appointment.  They will call us to schedule at a later date.  😥 So no chance to get SSN before the wedding.  Hopefully not too much trouble afterwards.  Not much we can do I guess.

Not much we can do either - they haven't contacted us at all and we got married last Friday!

Good luck to you!

Question?

Now that we are married (12/11/20!), I've Google AOS and it sent me to USCIS form I-485 - but it has an expiration date of 10/31/2020.  If they have this expiration date on a form, shouldn't they have a current form available?

The "expiration dates" on USCIS forms are for internal purposes only.

If the version of the form you have is the current version (the one you get when you search for it on the USCIS web site), don't worry about the expiration date.

Thank you!

I just know that I had to re-do the I-129 form for USCIS and the Jamaican passport form because they were updated midway through the filing process.  I didn't want to go through that again.

Yeah; that can happen, and is a pain (though easier when things are on a computer and not paper).

I had Anastasia's AOS forms pretty much filled out with everything I knew (so missing the exact wedding date and a few other details) before she got here ... and by the time we had a copy of our marriage certificate in hand, one of them had a new version so we needed to copy everything over.
