The US Embassy in Ukraine has so far resumed:

  • CR-1 / IR-1 spousal visas
  • And now Student visas

How can they be prioritizing student visas over K1 visas?  How does it make any more sense for them to say they're prioritizing family based visa services and then turn around and start processing student visas?

I am generally laid back in this process, thinking 'it is what it is', but this is insulting.

Just a guess, but schools have a set schedule and most are starting soon so it would make some sense to try to get student visas processed in time for them to make the start of school.  K1 visas technically can wait, especially in the minds of uninvested parties.  For us it is the most important thing of course, but sadly we have to wait with no clarity in sight for when we will be prioritized.  :(

That might make sense.  From what I've been able to discern, however, it doesn't seem like the embassies are asking applicants to show that they actually have a school to attend.  Most schools have moved to online-only this semester which diminishes the urgency of processing J1's in my opinion.  I still strongly feel that K1's lack of priority is a poor decision.  K1 is as much a family based visa as are spousal visas.  Spousals simply have a marriage certificate.

I know, I know, I should just shut up and take it according to the recommendations here.  😂

CR-1, Students then K-1's. There is the priority. Just saying.

After a long silence, the U.S. Embassy in Algiers will start re-issuing visas for Expired Immigrant Visas, Expired Diversity Visas, and Expired K1/K2 Finacée Visas. The embassy will not issue any new visas until the end of the Presidential Proclamation (10052) due 12/31/2020.
The road seems long for now, but I hope it'll brighten up for the upcoming weeks.

This is wonderful news for those waiting on Algiers!!  Where are you finding such disclosures?

I keep looking and watching for Jamaica to resume K1 processing, but they keep blaming the Proclamation,  which doesn't even talk about K1s.

I AGREE with you as well I think K1 should fall under the category of family based visa. However, they don't seem to share the same sentiments.

Anyways if I were to venture a guess I think the reason student visa is being processed before K1 is because, student fees/application costs & all the other expenses international students/foreign exchange students would have to pay will help USCIS & the economy/govt to pay out some debt. The costs for their processes are far more expensive than for K1 I think, like I said I'm guessing. I read an article that highlighted USCIS being in debt & there's no surprise that the US economy is struggling. 😕😅

I hope we all get through this SOON! Stay safe.

Thank you for posting this!!

I did some tallying for July:

Embassies in 54 countries have processed at least 1 K1 visas.

The Embassy in Jamaica processed 12 in July and another 6 in June.

The Philippines has processed 119!  And they have NEVER stopped processing them during Covid - slowed down a bit in March-April, but continued to have approvals all through these 5 months.

Now tell me again how the Proclamation says they cannot process K1 visas????

In a Facebook group I'm in there are a couple of attorneys who are investigating and collecting information to go forward with a class action lawsuit to pressure the federal government to resume K1 processing for ALL.

Whoever is responding to the emails give conflicting messages. K1s are not banned and in the last live session for Jamaica this was mentioned. Why they are not being processed who knows. Jamaica has given visas to people who already had their interviews. I received an email today stating my fiance is banned from interviewing until December 31 due to the proclamation but his medical is good for 7 months. I can only laugh at this point.

Just got another message back from the consulate after I said the ban doesn't apply to k1 stating that it does not. K1 visas are not banned.

So positive news of the day if you have done the medical already it has an expiration of 7 months. At least I got confirmation on that.

Well this is good news, but why do they keep telling the public they're NOT processing them when asked??

When was your case sent to the Embassy?  Did you have your interview already?

It was sent back in March no my interview was cancelled in March. I think it all depends on who is responding to the emails. Unfortunately communication isn't good and we have to "pick sense out of nonsense". They are processing people who already had their interviews but they are currently not doing any new interviews.
