Question 14 on the form 'DS-156' asks for a 'National Identification Number'

I am not aware that I have one of these, I havent heard of them before. In the UK we have a 'National Insurance Number', but I am not sure if this would be correct to put in there.

What did other people put? From UK especially.

Thanks!

The UKC would put 'NONE' as we do not have this number. It is different to our NI number.

You can also fill this out online which automatically prints the barcode as well.

James,

I thought I read somewhere that the UK had recently instituted a National ID, and the citizenry was not happy about it? Or was there just a proposal that didn't get off the ground?

In any event, your National Insurance Number, like our Social Security Number, is not a National Identification Number (although it may used in many ways as though it were one).

I just checked mine and I have the word 'none' in there. Maybe it automatically puts it in at the end.

Yes, that is correct for some/most forms, however on this particular one, it removes the N/A from any name sections you have filled in. You also cannot put N/A for your national identification number. You simply leave it blank.

MarieAnastasia,

True. Thing is, many people don't understand what 'not applicable' means, think it's equivalent to 'none' (which it isn't), and try to answer an applicable question with 'not applciable'.
