How could you use the term gaslighting over 200 times and not understand the original concept came from this movie?

I call BS on the fact that this Dr. invented the term.  There was a movie from 1944 way before she ever wrote this book.

Yeah you cannot call BS because everyone knows that the doctors based this syndrome on this movie.

The initial comment was that this Dr. came up with the term.  That is what I am calling BS on.

The demographic relying on NPR for "news" trust NPR more than Trump's tweets. Huge shock.

If one wants to know what drove a pointless "study":

And attitude change is precisely the goal of fake news. Science and information itself is nothing more than a narrative to push.

In their disappointment with the 2016 results in their own analysis, they made sure for the latter not to point out in the real world how effective Trump's fake news tweets are and how much they resonate with a populace that does distrust the media, nor address the media's credibility itself by virtue of Trump's election and steadfast support.

All aboard the gaslight express. :pop:

(tl;dr-> It's not backfiring)

So it is clear by now that the claim that you have ready the study is not true.

Sorry, to be more correct the doctor came up with the phrase "the gaslight effect." I misspoke, and am sort of/not sort of surprised that this caused so much discussion here. Here's an article by the author on the topic: https://www.vox.com/first-person/2018/12/19/18140830/gaslighting-relationships-politics-explained

Quote

The phrase originated from a 1938 mystery thriller written by British playwright Patrick Hamilton called Gas Light, made into a popular movie in 1944 starring Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer. In the film, husband Gregory manipulates his adoring, trusting wife Paula into believing she can no longer trust her own perceptions of reality.

In one pivotal scene, Gregory causes the gaslights in the house to flicker by turning them on in the attic of the house. Yet when Paula asks why the gaslights are flickering, he insists that it’s not really happening and that it’s all in her mind, causing her to doubt her self-perception. Hence the term “gaslighting” was born.

The term appeared in academic discourse before it hit the mainstream. Its use goes back as far as 1980 in academic journal articles about women’s socialization. Experts postulated that women were trained to long and hunger for relationships and connection, a conditioning that made them vulnerable to exploitation of their attachment, which is exactly what gaslighting is.

It’s unclear when exactly the term seeped into the world of popular psychology, but it’s now frequently employed in couples counseling and self-help books to describe a specific type of toxic relationship.

I hope that clears it up a little, sorry to have gotten so many knickers twisted.

Even though I actually cited part of the study that wasn't in the article (it helps having a researcher and alumni access, try it sometime)...

Another OT failure, and, as much as the repeated failures amuse, the last that gets a response. Try another bridge.

Edit: Also, no, I'm not going to commit copyright infringement and give you the study. If you can't get access, dunno what to tell you. Maybe try reading the things you cite before citing them or cite something else.  n7iZe0I.gif

Nope, you cited no part of the study, pulled some bios from other sources and misunderstood the summary article.

I cited the article, not the study.

I made no claim to have accessed, read and summarized the study all in the span of 30 minutes. That is your claim.
