   If you have someone on ignore, you do see when someone else quotes them. Or you can display the post. A quick chronological search for the term gives you the empirical data. Gas lighting actually has a definition and was generally brought up in context in the past. Now it seems to be used to avoid actually rebutting the article. 

 

  I wouldn't ever put anyone on ignore because they are annoying. It's because their posting, formatting and use of images, structure, or repetitive content makes it difficult to read other relevant posts. In essence, it's for the same reason I would use an add blocker. It's not that the adds bother me, they just make it hard to read the real posts.

 

  The only other person I've ever had on ignore was IAMX. Go figure. Another US ex patriot living in Calgary who made the forum difficult to read.

I read a little on it. Basic manipulation.  I get it in real life but dont see how it really translates to arguing and bsing around in here

   I will say, the subject of gas lighting is serious. It's very important to your well being to recognize if someone is using it on you, and I have known people who did this. I don't see how we can attribute that same effect to an article in the media though. If a media article is enough to make someone question their sanity, their sanity may already need questioning.

  Definitely. Racism also has a very specific definition which is often overlooked or ignored by people who want to use the term for effect (or agenda).

It's a little deeper than that, but yes. It generally involves the other person -- the gaslighter -- being a narcissist. I have had two of these people in my life -- not dealing with the effects of the first made it that much "easier" for me to not recognize the pattern emerging again.

It is very serious, and I have been working hard for some time to rebuild myself after years of abuse. I don't mind it being used as a term outside of a strictly mental health environment, but when it is used over and over and over again like a cudgel, it not only loses its strength as an analogy, it looks an awful lot like bullying.

I call BS on the fact that this Dr. invented the term.  There was a movie from 1944 way before she ever wrote this book.

Without looking, I think it was a book even before then, and a play, then a movie in 1940 and 1944.
