Cliff Richard was young once???? Lol, one of the things I have gained over the years from being married to British men is a knowledge of random celebs from over there who have basically made no dent over here. This is the Cliff Richard song I know best because Al sings the chorus to me sometimes, which actually raises several questions for me about his musical knowledge:

Described as very gay....

Well meant something different back then but there was always questions about Cliff.

For the  Muricans he was sort of a British Elvis.

SIGH

I have learned my lesson. Again. I have rosacea (and have posted about it a bunch on here), so I need to be careful with my skincare products. I got into a good routine of a day and night serum, day and night moisturizers, and day and night cleansers. The cleansers are both Neutrogena, and all was well for many months. And then...

I was tempted. I saw reviews for a face wash -- Korres Greek Yoghurt Foaming Face Cleanser https://www.korres.com/products/greek-yoghurt-foaming-cream-cleanser?variant=33140371357755 -- and they said it was great for redness. Ummmmm.......

I AM A TOMATO :crying: A hot, red mess. After three days using it, I broke out in tiny rosacea bumps everywhere. I have meds but it will be a week until everything is calmed down.

I should listen to my dermatologist and use the products she tells me to use. I am easily swayed by good reviews!

Husband is also using the face wash and says he finds it fine. Typical.

Great product line alerts! I was very skeptical of a celebrity makeup line, but on a whim (and on the basis of a few great reviews I read) I recently bought a couple of items from Selena Gomez's Rare Beauty brand and they are both pretty amazing.

"Kind Words" lip liner in the shade Humble (https://www.rarebeauty.com/products/kind-words-matte-lip-liner?variant=39918124236935) -- soft and still precise. It is the prettiest, gentlest pink and the staying power was fantastic. LOVE it!

And the very best (and out of stock nearly everywhere) was the "Soft Pinch" liquid blush in the shade Believe (https://www.rarebeauty.com/products/soft-pinch-liquid-blush?variant=39649324204167). A sweet and very natural flush that was so flattering, nearly everyone told me the first time I wore it (which was today) that I looked healthier and happier than the day before. Kohl's actually has it in stock, which is where I found it.

Some other new finds, brought to me by a friend in the cosmetics development biz -- Jason Wu is a fashion designer who has a new line of cosmetics/beauty out there. My friend works for the company that developed the product formulations, which is how I got a bunch of freebies. ALL of them are gorgeous and very, very affordable -- available at Target. My top picks from the line are:

Ready Set Matte setting powder (https://jasonwubeauty.com/collections/vegan/products/ready-set-matte) -- better than FAR more expensive brands. Keeps me matte but not too matte. And the powder puff is pretty luxe.

Felt Tip Liner in Intense Black (https://jasonwubeauty.com/collections/eyeliners/products/felt-tip-liner-01-intense-black) -- I have been off pen liners for over a year. I find them smeary and fiddly and difficult to control, and half the time I ended up looking like I'd put too much on. This is precise and easy to handle, and can be as subtle as you like. And I like a subtle, thin black line sometimes, with a very plain fawn lid.

Hot Fluff lipstick in Jelly Roll (https://jasonwubeauty.com/products/lipstick-clean-beauty-hot-fluff-jelly-roll) -- I was afraid of this lipstick in the tube! It looked wrong for my skin tone (light-medium with peach undertones) and going to be dark, but my friend told me to shut up and try it. It was not as intense as I thought it would be. It's buildable, so I was able to do a blurred-out wash that was very flattering.

Good Night Mr. Wu (https://jasonwubeauty.com/collections/lip-treatments/products/over-night-lip-mask-goodnight-mr-wu) -- this is an overnight lip mask. It is easily as good as the VERY (too) expensive one I bought from La Neige. And you only need a teensy bit to have great results. I wake up every morning with soft lips. This is appreciated by the other person in my marriage!

Extra Pout (https://jasonwubeauty.com/products/lip-plumper-extra-pout) -- the clear is the one I have, and it's currently sold out. For good reason! It does tingle but it's a great plumper. I wear it over the Selena Gomez lip liner.

I cannot recommend this line highly enough. If you're on a tighter budget but still want great quality makeup that's at least one cut above Cover Girl, Maybelline, etc., this is it. It's also cruelty-free if that's important. Not vegan because it uses beeswax.

In male grooming news, my husband has agreed to submit to a haircut before his mother, sister, daughter, and daughter's mum descend upon us next week (please keep me in your thoughts!). Also he has considered opinions on my choice of lavender-scented toothpaste but hey -- he bought it for me! I remind him there is a tube of Aquafresh in his bathroom and he is welcome to use it.

  • 5 weeks later...

I've lost track of a few of my more recent purchases, and most of them have been repeat skincare buys anyway (relatively boring). But... I wanted to recommend one product I recently bought out of curiosity.

Normally, I prefer to use L'Occitane Almond Shower Oil in the shower. It has been instrumental in keeping my skin hydrated, and hydrated skin is more likely to remain healthy than dry skin -- fewer cracks, etc. to let nasty stuff in. It is also stupid expensive -- I buy the refill bags and they are pretty large, but $40 a bag.

I decided to do a little research and found this stuff which oh myyyyyy is so fantastic and makes my skin look and feel even better: https://www.amazon.com/Doliderm-Paris-Rituel-Honey-Shower/dp/B09JPD48QJ/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=Doliderm&qid=1660359956&sr=8-2 It is twice the size of my L'Occitane refill and costs $15 less (after the coupon). I have been using it for a month and I expect it will take me nearly 5 months to use it all up. At less than  $5/month, that is affordable luxury. It also smells lovely, but light.

Obviously this only applies to those of us looking for luxury at a good price, if you like your Irish Spring that's all on you. :P

Oh, thank you!  Years ago, Bourjois made an body oil and it smelled amazing.  Very, very, light hazelnut smell.  It has been discontinued and I have been disappointed by the Nuxe oil.  So far, the best replacement I have found is the Alba Kukui Hawaiian Oil. The smell is not too strong, and it is very hydrating.    My parents are currently in France, I might ask them to grab a bottle of the Doliderm, it's about 8 Euros there.  I have trouble with body cream, but drops of oil seem to work well on my (body) skin.

Recent purchase is a bright lip crayon (colour, Make it happen).  While it is not perfect, I am surprised by the quality for the price.  It does stay on forever, but it is a bit drying (like all long wear lipstick I have tried...).  Wanted something a little more cherry than bright red, and the colour is right.

Enjoy your weekend, beauty lovers 😝

That color is gorgeous! What a beautiful red. My absolute all time two favorite reds are both very affordable -- Sephora Lipstories in "Popsicle Lips" ($8) and Rimmel London Lasting Finish in "001" (£4.49/C$7.98 -- can't find it on a US site). The 001 used to be Rimmel Kate Moss 01, and I remember it was the first lipstick I bought from a Boots chemist in the UK. I bought it to go on a date with my first husband, and unbelievably I still like the shade. Maybe it is true that we stick with the beauty trends that made us look good when we were still at our most young and beautiful. I mean, I still wear NARS Orgasm blush, which was the very first blush I ever owned, and I always have a thing of Benetint on my vanity and a tube of Burts Bees lipgloss in my handbag...

Miss England finalist becomes first in pageant's history to compete without makeup

https://www.cnn.com/style/article/miss-england-finalist-no-makeup-intl-scli-gbr/index.html

AMiss England finalist has become the first ever beauty queen to compete without wearing any makeup in the pageant's nearly century-long history.
Melisa Raouf, a 20-year-old college student from south London, moved forward at the pageant's semifinals on Monday after opting for a barefaced look. Now, she'll compete in the finals this October for the crown.
"It means a lot to me as I feel many girls of different ages wear makeup because they feel pressured to do so," Raouf said in an interview with the UK's Independent newspaper.
"If one is happy in their own skin we should not be made to cover up our face with makeup. Our flaws make us who we are and that's what makes every individual unique," she added.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
