USAA won't add me to my husband's bank account!

This is odd.. or maybe USAA just isn’t being consistent. I added my fiancé to my USAA account and he isn’t even in the country yet. He has a SSN because he previously came on a J1 visa but that’s all they asked me for.

Yeah, I'm thinking I might have to call them myself to clarify (up to this point, it's only been my husband calling them). I am not a LPR, I don't have my green card yet (and probably won't until the summer based on current wait times for my local field office). I only have the NOA letters.

I don't know what to call myself - I think for tax purposes, I should be a 'resident alien', but I am not sure. What my husband has told USAA so far is that I am not yet a permanent resident but that I am waiting for my green card, and hence their request for the W8-Ben. Although, true, maybe I do need to talk to a higher up with more experience with couples like us.

I didn't know it was an option to talk to the IRS - thanks for that tip!

Once you have the Green Card and SSN USAA is easy peasy. I got a little bit of a runaround and decided to wait until my wife received her Green Card.

Finally done...

But don't they ask for evidence of joint bank accounts at the green card interview?

Nope, not in ours. This is a quote from our interviewer. "She has only been in the US for six months. I don't expect much co-mingling at AOS. That should come with ROC." Of course interviews can vary widely. But, ours was very understanding. I explained that we had difficulty getting a SSN which made getting everything else difficult. The only thing we had together was health insurance and I put her on my electric bill. We were approved the same day and had the Green Card within the week.

ohhh interesting ok. I am on his health insurance, renter's insurance, lease, so ok good to know if this USAA route doesn't work out at this time.

We sent USAA the W8-Ben last night and haven't heard yet if that'll work this time.

We are going in with 12 pounds of evidence,  but she will be in a car carrier.   :)

YMMV

Did you do it at the bank itself on I-10? It seems we have a far easier time in person than on the phone or out of Texas. I'm going with consistency issue for sure.

Oh no worries! I figured you didn't, I was asking the person I had quoted.

And yeah that's the only downside is that it seems that the people in the call centers and online services are a lot more ridged than those in person. I hope it all gets worked out for ya'll, but if it becomes too much of a hassle I would recommend doing what others said and just opening up an account with another bank. USAA is great, don't get me wrong, but at least to get you started it may be easier to start with another bank.

i wasn't able to add my wife until we got her green card. its not a dealbreaker in most cases for the AoS interview. you should be able to get other proof if needed, but I know some financial institutions are a little prickly

just as an fyi and hopefully it can relieve the stress from worrying about it
