I went thru at Petro course in the military. Almost made me scared to go to the gas station

I'm not sure, but I believe the number of explosions at gas stations due to either cell phones or cars running tally up to zero still today.

Most fires at gas pumps are due to static charge.  I always cringe when I see someone jump out of their vehicles, start the pump and jump back in.  If you are doing this, make sure you discharge yourself prior to removing the nozzle.

No, nothing so exciting. Getting blinds I can't stand replaced and the missing part of the bed arrived (finally). Grocery run to Vons. You know, the usual glamorous stuff.

Test driving a Volvo something something this afternoon. XC40? We need a car, I am quickly realizing. I've been making do with cycling to the supermarket but I would like to buy more than just a couple days of stuff at a time. I had a Mazda CX5 (I think) when we first moved down here as a rental, but I returned it last week. It felt a bit too big for what I want.

No, not the police. I appointed myself the DM updater for Boiler. More links are fine by me.

Oh how I miss Vons...… What's funny is that we were going through stuff this weekend to make sure we got everything before we sent a couple boxes to the Philippines. Well we ended up finding some of those Vons paper bags that you can get for like .25 cents each. We miss the Vons in East Pasadena right on Sierra Madre and Colorado.

I agreee that static discharge is a bigger threat.  But even that... how many fires have actually occurred?  I mean, she was very lucky that it was such a small fire.  And I am guessing it can be more common today than a few years ago due to fuel tank filler necks being composite as opposed to metal.

Around 150-200 fires in a ten year period which is not that many in the grand scheme of things.  A lot of factors involved.  Having cloth seats increases the static charge one is carrying, the clothes one is wearing.  It is interesting, almost 80% of the fuel pump fires involve women, most likely because they jump back in the vehicles.  More than likely, composite fill pipes are made from a conductive plastic, so that may not change much.  The big issue is the vapor being vented at the pipe opening, it does not take much energy to ignite gasoline.  Anyway, just like converting metric to imperial or visa versa, there is an easy fix, discharge oneself when they get out of the car.

Interesting side note. One of my service advisors told me that after the nozzle clicks, when the tank is full do not keep trying to add that last little bit. evidently many makes have an over flow doohickey in the neck and a filter that catches it. If you do it a lot that filter can clog and cause you a $$ repair bill

I am not familiar with that, but excessively topping off the tank can overload the canister and potentially even lead to liquid into the canister through the vent valves which could cause some expensive repairs.

She can move to Oregon or Nueva Jersey where, apparently by law, others must pump the gas.

I know which one you mean! If you ever need some more, I can send them on to you. :)

The one I've been going to is a few blocks away from the Third Street Promenade. The weather here is PERFECT today -- bright with only a few clouds, and it's supposed to be about 70. Going to do another walk along the seawall today -- it does so much for my attitude to just be soaking in nature and sun. While wearing my sunblock, of course. :P

The damage can happen to the carbon vapor recovery canister that is only designed to have vapors in it.  Topping off can cause liquid fuel to be pushed into the canister, causing premature failure.  Cost can be from $200-1500 I have read online.

In over 21 years, I only saw it happen once during refueling an external tank on a helicopter.  The refueled didn't insert the bonding jumper into the tank, started the flow of fuel, and when he pulled the nozzle back to check the level, it sparked.  It was also -35° C and humidity was extremely low that day.

If you ever witnessed a helicopter refueling under NVGs, it is quite amazing to see the "spark disc" created by the blade tips hitting dust in the air.
