I have had 2 American made cars go 300K. My father had a pick-up that went 350K. It all depends on how you take care of them.

If we all turned just 1/3 of our gasoline engline into diesel engines, we wouldn't need all the oil that we get from Saudi Arabia and a few other countries run by tin pot dictators.

But the combined front of the oil industry and environmental lobby are stopping that from happening. Even though they've been using it in Europe for years with no appreciable environmental effects with the better refining technology that they have over there. Last time I checked, Eurpoe was a lot more environmentally aware that the US is and they are completely fine with diesel and nuclear power as well, but that's another story.

Heaven forbid the oil industry do something that would erode their record profits. It's better to lean on the auto industry to get increasingly diminishible returns on engine technology that to deal with the real elephant in the room. It's seems like their "support" of politicians has been paying off in spades, especially with the oil man in chief in the White House.

They were sometimes called Nicad, but never NiCa (which would be inaccurate, as it's the wrong element anyway--the batteries use Cadmium, the same as nuclear-reactor control rods).

OOps ... they certainly aren't Nickel-CALCIUM batteries..... my bad... I've been studying action potentials so i ought to know that one! I did indeed mean Nickel Cadmium. The point remains the same, though ... I don't really know what is in the car batteries but I know they recycle them, in any case!

This is misleading at best. Diesel #2 is petroleum, just like gasoline. We would only reduce our dependency with diesel only if we went with biodiesel. But we could do that with ethanol, too. Of course, it is much easier job with biodiesel, since no conversion is required.
