I have a question regarding to Joint-sponsor for I-864 because I am still not sure if I need one. So here is our financial situation: I and my husband both worked in the UK for the past 4 years, and have been filing the US tax jointly. My husband got a job offer this year and moved back the US this July to start the new job. So basically we didn’t income in the US until this July. If I have the tax transcripts for year 2017-2019 plus UK payslips(P60), his new job offer letter plus his recent payslips, and the income is above the minimum wage required for affidavit support, do we still need a joint sponsor?

For the purposes of sponsoring, the UK income will be entirely disregarded—unless your husband’s income will continue from the same company inside the US. Since you mention “new job” I assume that’s not the case.

thus, you need to hit the threshold on his current income (I.e., the job he just started). You can either calculate his current income from his recent payslips * annual pay periods, or go by his contract if he’s salaried. You can prove this with pay stubs, an employment verification letter on company letter head, or an employment contract.

if you do not hit the threshold, you can use liquid assets (e.g., savings or investments) to complement by following the guidance on the form, or a joint sponsor.

Good answer above and a further comment—
For the I-864, his 2019 tax transcript is required. His total income (Line 7b on the latest 1040) won’t qualify him as a sole sponsor, but the optional proofs allowed can qualify him.

Say his new job pays $2000/month. On the I-864 line that says “my current income...”

he enters $24,000 (12 mo x $2000). He has to prove that amount with an employer letter stating that is his current salary or with 6 months of pay stubs showing that is his salary. Then he will qualify as the sponsor even though Line 7b of his tax return doesn’t qualify.

The transcripts for 2017-2018 and the P60 aren’t really a factor, but take anything you want.

Thank you so much for the information! I feel much relieved. Just to be safe I’ll also bring our asset documents to the interview to show that we have the cash to cover 1.25*threshold*3 gap.

Turn in the basics at the first window. When you are with the interviewer at the second window, you will have the rest to pull out if needed. I think you will find that London won’t be overly inquisitive about the affidavit of support. They tend to glance at it and if it all looks okay, not discuss it much. On people with a joint sponsor, they may ask “how do you know this person?”

I really hope those of us remaining to get this number get it this week.

I have been away from my husband for over a month now and this weekend really got to me. It feels all the more worse because going through DCF was supposed to be quicker etc. The fact that it’s more unknown than the other way just really finishes you.

Praying for good news this week!! Next Monday is Labor Day so, it’s a short week and doing they’ll get much done. Good vibes to you all!!

I do hope they sort out the remaining DCFers. This is getting beyond frustrating. I'm going to keep bugging them though. Sadly, today I doubt they are working as it is a bank holiday and I'm sure they won't be working next Monday either for Labor day. :(

My wife (USC) has been stalking this page for months, but is too shy to post, hence I’m here now (UKC)

it’s so frustrating to see that so many of us are still waiting for the LDN case number to come through. We were literally about a week away from ours right as the pandemic hit, hence at this point we’re about 25 weeks into the process.

we received our notice of approval on our wedding anniversary (Feb 27th) and still waiting.

Ive emailed numerous times to ask for a status update and just being told the same as everyone here, that there’s a huge backlog. What makes it more frustrating is that some people who filed in June have already received their number, so it seems there’s definitely been a huge ####### up somewhere along the line...

In a weird way I’m a little relieved to see that there are still SOME people around the same amount of time waiting on here, at least it gives me comfort that we’re not the only people with such a long wait (although I think we might be the longest waiting that I’ve seen on here so far)

fingers crossed for everyone still waiting, and hopefully as soon as we receive the case number, things should move relatively quickly after that (hopefully)

Don’t give up hope folks. My wife and I are flying out to the US right now, just 1 week after my interview at the embassy (my wife’s visa extension runs out today) so we were blessed that it came through on time. Only God!

There are a few of us still waiting. As you mention there does seem to be a lack of strategic thinking in all of this. All we can do is wait and see.

It's very tough. My husband and I were long distance for 3.5 out of our 4.5 year relationship - sometimes with a 13 hour time difference - and the uncertainty was very difficult to deal with. But once it's all done the feeling is so wonderful and you appreciate the time together so much more. We did lots of fun things while long distance e.g. watch movies together, take me on a walk via video call.

It's difficult but hang in there!

Well, back from holiday. There was a pile of post inside the door (including no less than 8 letters from HMRC about tax credits 🙄) but still no LND. Before I left I had reached out to my congresswoman, but they sent me a form to fill out giving my permission for them to contact USCIS on my behalf (despite me explaining numerous times that our petition is with the embassy) which I promptly sent back but have heard nothing. I’m not really expecting anything, just felt like I should be doing something.

Was really hoping the letter would be waiting for me when I got back. Pretty gutted. Here’s hoping this is the week for all of us still waiting...
