I just spoke to the operator at the embassy who said there is no one I can talk to in the visa department. Not surprised.

 

I explained my situation of waiting 23 weeks with no information and all he could do is provide me with an email of londoninfounit@state.giv and that I should email them with an enquirers. Looks like the journey on the merry go round continues.

Hi folks, I have a question regarding to documents translations. We got married in South Korea, so the marriage certificate is in Korean. We used the translation done by a colleague back in South Korea for I-130, and it got approved without any issues.

Question: does anyone here have experience with documents not in English for visa interview? Does it have to be translated by an official agent?

I was of the impression that translated docs had to have a formal Stamp which showed the translator was appropriately registered and competent. Isnt that what the instruction for documents requiring translation to English states? Maybe I misunderstood 🥴

As far as I have ever known, the translation has to be “certified“, but not by a paid service. Your colleague can write and sign the certification at the end of his translation. Something like “I certify that I am fluent in both English and Korean and the above translation is accurate to the best of my ability”. Then signature, address, ...

Thank you so much for the information. Our translation only has the colleague’s signature but not his statement. It is notarised in the US. To be safe, I will ask him to sign it with a statement in it

Aw, that sucks. We must’ve just gotten through to someone more helpful on the day we called. He couldn’t tell us anything specific to our case, but was at least able to offer some reasons as to why they were behind. Good luck to you.

"All documents not in English must be accompanied by an official, certified translation in English.

The translator must provide  a signed statement confirming that the translation is accurate.  Only one copy is needed. The translation does not need to be notarized.

Note: Applicants are also required to bring the original document, in the original language."

 

I guess the dillema lies in the definition of "official".

 

We too require docs translated from Panama Spanish to English. Decided to get it done by recognised translators. No point cutting corners as potentially it would just delay things.

I agree, the definition of “official “ is hard to gauge. The translation done by the colleague has been fine for the past four years, we used it to apply for my UK visa, to file the petition at USCIS, never had any issues with it though.

Translations. If you submit a document with information in a foreign language, you must also submit a full English translation. The translator must sign a certification that the English language translation is complete and accurate, and that he or she is competent to translate from the foreign language into English. The certification should also include the date, the translator’s signature and printed name, and may contain the translator’s contact information.

 

There used to be a sample statement provided that I can’t find now. I haven’t ever heard of anybody who was refused on a non-paid translation, but I have heard of holdups if the foreign language document was not with translation. Be sure to bring both.

I was doing belt n braces by getting the translation done by a company. At a cost of course......😑

Its a poor show this and, as far as seeking info on progress is concerned, its as bad as the UK system. Very disappointing.
