For me it's just the medical history and vaccination records. I cant seem to get anything useful out of my GP right now - As in they dont respond to Email and dont want me visiting! But I think that's going to have to be done soon.... Police certificate was real quick for me. Took a week.

We got lucky. They emailed the summary and shot history over. Only thing we are unsure on is if he will need to get the flu shot before any medical. We are hoping to schedule his medical for Oct. Based on what I've read he shouldn't need one as flu season will not have begun yet.

We had to request it in writing and post it to the surgery.  They were relatively quick to back to us, even during lockdown.

Really useful. Thanks. I'll probably just give them a call again and see what can be done.

That does sound easy! The flu shot thing is a bit silly IMO. I mean everything else fine, but the flu? I'm fine with needles, but having random chemicals pumped into my body when I don't need them is a bit annoying!

I agree. We've always avoided the flu shots when we lived in the US and here. Technically, according to the NHS, flu season doesn't begin until December, so we hope he isn't required to get it.

Hi Robyn,

For immigration purposes, if your husband has his medical anytime between the October 1 to March 31, he'll need a flu shot (https://www.uscis.gov/policy-manual/volume-8-part-b-chapter-9). It's US flu season that they're concerned about, not the UK's...

Sorry I might be wrong but do we need medical history from GP for the interview or medical examination? I am applying for an Spousal visa but didn’t see any requirements of the medical history on the embassy website.

You need it for the Medical. Once you’ve attended your in person Medical appointment, Visamedicals then deals with sending over the relevant information to the Embassy. This is why people typically schedule their Embassy appointments a few days after the Medical (to allow for enough time for the information to be sent across).

It's for the medical, as is the police certificate.  From the embassy webpage about the medical, it says you have to provide:

  • Photo identification (e.g. driving licence, passport);
  • 4 photographs which meet Department of State requirements;
  • For applicants aged 16 and over, a UK police certificate (known as an ACRO) issued within the past 6 months;
  • Vaccination records, which can be obtained from your regular healthcare provider.
  • Completed medical questionnaire

So, no, you don't need them for the interview. But you have to have the medical to get the visa, so it's helpful to have those things in hand so you can book your medical without any hitches.

ahh fair enough. I hadn't seen that part before. We may try and schedule the medical before the end of Sept then. Granted, we can't do anything until we get the sodden LDN number. :)

So from my understanding, getting the medical history is for getting the vaccination records?

You will want to have a medical summary from your GP (this will list what they are treating you for as well as any medications you are on) as well as a vaccination record to take to your medical.

Actually, from the Visa Medicals website:

  • Appointment letter from the United States Embassy
  • Passport
  • 4 identical passport-sized photographs (four for each applicant, including babies)
  • Medical questionnaire (form IV18a) completed, (one for each applicant, including all children)
  • Police certificate (unless you have already sent original to the Embassy)
  • Spectacles or contact lenses if worn
  • Vaccination records, with original certification
  • For children of 7 or under, the 'Red Book' health record, if available
  • Print-out of medical records summary from GP
  • Copies of GP/specialist reports, if available, for any significant medical conditions, including all psychiatric. If there is any history of TB or tuberculosis contact, please obtain old records, including investigation and treatment details
  • Records for any treatment of STDs
  • When there may be special educational needs, please provide any recent educational, psychological assessments, school reports etc.

So not just the vaccination record, you will need a physical copy of your medical care summary (and any glasses or contacts which I didn't realise!!).

So, are you saying a printout from an email with the medical summary won't be sufficient? Hubby's GP emailed over the summary to him along with his vaccination record.

If you print that out you should be fine. This is exactly what the GP would print out anyhow.

This doesn't apply to most people, but if he has any chronic medical conditions or psychiatric illnesses, then a brief statement from the GP explaining the nature of the illness and treatments received would be needed.

Thankfully the only thing he is treated for is type 2 diabetes. So any medications he is on are listed.
