Poll: 63% of Americans favor letting illegal immigrants become citizens if they pass a background check and learn English

Because effectively petition this government of ours, they cannot.

Maybe you think they shouldn't be able to, but whether they can do so effectively or not will be borne by the success or failure of this legislation. Time will tell. My sense is that amnesty is coming and no one can stop it.

Judging from the outcry we just had I would say we have a good chance of stopping any amnesty this time. The American people are now watching and it is obvious that we do not want an amnesty. If the pinheads in Washington keep up with this amnesty talk they will see a house cleaning bigger than the one that swept the Reps into power the last time.

IMHO, you guys are wrong. Most Americans sense the injustice in uprooting people who have laid down roots in our society, who our society and economy have come to depend on. The amnesty will happen. You're on the wrong side of history, but it isn't too late to repent. Embrace an amigo today.

I honestly can't see anyone in govt supporting the zero tolerance demands coming from certain sectors of the public. So we'll likely end up with some sort of amnesty, albeit called something else - and with certain conditions built into it.

Well I guess we will have to disagree. I will never go along with amnesty and will not vote for anyone that advocates it. I work in a large factory with lots of dems and the overwhelming majority are dead set against amnesty. It is a common topic and I have talked to dozens of people about it. It is really the only thing we agree on. It isn't an injustice to make them go home. It is justice.

Start looking at this on a case-by-case basis, and that black-and-white facade will quickly reveal various shades of grey.

Especially when you start to look at USCs who have resident illegal relatives, and illegal parents of USC children. If that were to happen, those protests in the south would only be the beginning IMO.

I really don't care. They are here illegally and they should go home. My heartstrings are not tugged by their plight. They brought it on themselves when they came. Call me a heartless ####### if you want.

I won't call you names, Gary. I will say, though, that most people are nicer than that. And that's precisely why what you're suggesting won't happen.

Again, we're disrupting the lives of American families each and every day. Millions of them. Why? Because one or more members of that family has broken the law. And nobody's marching. Those are Americans, mind you. What makes the illegal crowd better so that they need to be above the law? What exactly is it that entitles them and their families to better treatment than what a law breaking American and his family receives?

Voters were also asked, “Do you support or oppose the Bush administration’s proposal to give millions of illegal aliens guest worker status and the opportunity to become citizens?” Only 35 percent gave their support, and 56 percent said no.

“A majority opposed illegal immigration,” pollster John Zogby told CNN. “In fact, when you combine those two terms, ‘illegal and immigration,’ it really conjures up a considerable amount of negatives. And, in fact, we find that it’s really across the board.”

According to the report, the greatest opponents of illegal immigration are Democrats, African-Americans, women and people with household income below $75,000, those with the most to lose in the job market.

If you don't like the web site that I got this from I can find it on several others. I think it is clear that very few people favor amnesty. The more Washington wants it the more opposition will result. I will voice my opposition with my vote. I am sure a lot of others will do the same.

Most people are short-sighted and stupid. That's why there are polls like this one cited.

Count me in. :D

That's the one big advantage of the entire House being up for re-election every two years. The Members of the House are closer to the people that way and they know the sentiments in America. Many know that they can kiss their seat good bye if they support an amnesty.
