I agree.  I think the short term pain (6 - 8 months) of having no credit was not a huge problem for me.  I guess it could be a problem if you want to immediately buy a house in the US (i.e. within 18 months of moving there) and want the best rates, but outside of that you should have no problems getting car loans with no credit, and getting secured credit cards.  The better credit cards that are unsecured will be easier to get after 6-8 months.

The only potential issue that we are worried about is having a difficult time finding an apartment because I will have no credit and cannot be working for a little bit. Landlords may see that as a red flag and I do not blame them for it.

Are you serious?

Dead serious. It's an abomination! I literally live off 7/11 sometimes.

I used my wife's name (she was also on the lease) initially.  The other option I was given (which I didn't use) was to provide a month's worth of rent as a deposit.

Yeah I don't actually plan to, it was more of a joke than anything. If I'm going to open a business in MN its going to be a 7/11. There are ZERO in MN and me coming from the slurpee capital of the world, that's simply unacceptable!

Jeez no 7/11, check if there is a wawa's?! Wawa's is literally 10x better than 7/11!

RBC allowed me to open a US based credit card using my Canadian credit score.  Out of RBC and TD I always recommend RBC because I have not had any issues with moving money, getting a credit card, etc.

Ewwww RBC closed my bank account while I was in Canada because I bought bitcoin... I do the opposite! I will vouch for TD over RBC any day because TD lets me be more free with my money. 😕

Looks like they only have 2 locations there and none of them are even close to minneapolis.

Really RBC did that? A lot of my family is with them because my grandmother worked there for a very long time so as her family we have good "deals" with them. I only signed up with TD because it was close to my home. TD has crazy fees tho )):

Yeah, and I didn't have any fee's on my TD account when I had one. I closed my TD account though since moving to the US.

They charged me $15.00 PER ACCOUNT each MONTH. With having two accounts I was paying $30each month with them just to exist in their system. They kept charging me until I told them I was a student which I was at the time. This removed the monthly fees but if I do more than 25 transactions per month they charge me $1.25 PER TRANSACTION after that. Im not a big spender so I've never had problems with that but Christmas time and the month of June is when i do the bulk of my spending and then I start to worry. Although I am no longer a student I am still on a student account for now and just keeping an eye on how many times I use my debit card a month.

So my Canadian RBC  savings charges me for transactions but my US checking does not.

I have heard that most US banks don't charge too  many fees in comparison to Canadian banks

I don't have a single fee on any of my 3 accounts at 3 different banks beyond the 3.95/month monthly fee at the RBC bank.  My Navy Federal is a credit union so just needs a balance in it. And our USAA is a checking account that sees a lot of use.
