RICHMOND — Both chambers of Virginia’s General Assembly passed the Equal Rights Amendment Wednesday, fulfilling a promise that helped Democrats seize control of the legislature and marking a watershed moment in the nearly century-long effort to add protections for women to the U.S. Constitution.

The lopsided votes capped an emotional week in which Democrats — particularly female lawmakers, who now hold unprecedented positions of power in Richmond — celebrated history in the making.

Maybe because now it is time for the lawyers and courts to start making money.  As we discussed a while ago, this amendment is long past due, and really is a non-factor today, but there are a lot of serious legal questions that will now have to be answered before it is actually added to the Constitution.

Additionally, I don't remember a whole lot of fanfare when the 27th Amendment was finally ratified.

Wow , you are right

""

proposed congressional pay amendment was largely forgotten until 1982, when Gregory Watson, a 19-year-old sophomore at the University of Texas at Austin, wrote a paper for a government class in which he claimed that the amendment could still be ratified. A teaching assistant graded the paper a "C" and an appeal to the professor, Sharon Waite, failed, motivating Watson to launch a nationwide campaign to complete its ratification.[1] The amendment eventually became part of the United States Constitution, effective May 5, 1992,[2] completing a record-setting ratification period of 202 years, 7 months, and 10 days.[

The ERA ratification process expired in 82, and even its extension to 82 was questionable in legality. Nonetheless, it expired 38 years ago, so all these other ratifications after the fact are irrelevant, and purely an act of virtue signing and theater. There's no Constitutional weight behind it.

Where do toilets come into it, well I realise we now have equal access but not something I raised.

The whole concept of gender specific changing rooms is following this law no longer appropriate.

I would like to see where that is written.

Why stop there? We could just do away changing rooms and just give everyone a localized clothing optional big room.

Numerous legal hurdles still have to be cleared before the ERA, which prohibits discrimination based on sex, would become part of the Constitution.

From the article.
