Hello Everyone,

I just got an email from the IV unit requesting a notarized Divorce Certificate after my interview last week. During the interview, I handed in a copy of judgement of divorce nisi (divorce took place in US). Little did I know at the time that nisi was just provisional and absolute was the final paper. Anyway, I just ordered a copy of certificate of divorce absolute from the county and my question is, where should I have it notarized? Is it okay to have the certificate notarized by one of the consulates here? Or should it be notarized in America? Was wondering if anyone on this site has had similar experience. Any word on this is appreciated.

What's also confusing to me is the word they used, notarized. Now I start to think that they just meant a county seal stamped, court officer signed copy of the certificate, no point of getting that notarized again as it doesn't make sense for me to sign and no point for a notary public official to witness. Again, any word on this is appreciated.

Yes, you can use any notary that follows US law, but the easiest would be obtaining it from a US embassy or consulate.  I've notarized documents in the Guangzhou consulate multiple times, they are quite efficient and helpful.  You need the document notarized as proof the divorce certificate is a true copy with your signature.  They will seal and sign your sworn affidavit.

I wasn't sure if I needed to, and if needed, if I should get notarized at the consulate or elsewhere. You answered all my questions. Thank you!
