Different name on passport vs married name while traveling outside US

Me and my wife want to travel to Indonesia while her AOS is being processed since we are married after she came to the USA with a K1 visa. We plan to file the I-131 under her legal name which is different than her name on her Indonesian passport.

We plan to book her ticket based on her maiden name since that is her name on her passport so there is no issues flying to Indonesia. We are worried that since we will file the I-131 under her official married name it will cause problems during reentry since her passport has her maiden name. Are we overthinking it?

 

Do you guys have any suggestions or experience with a similar situation? Thank you!

She will need to carry her marriage certificate to connect the names.

IT Professional- Retired- Web Site Design, Hardware Maintenance, Compound Pharmacy Software Trainer, On-site go live support, Database Manager, App Designer.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

My wife traveled like this quite often.  Yes, get the tickets in the name on her passport, and as @missileman stated, carry a copy of the marriage certificate with you.  In all the times my wife did this and re-entered with her GC in her married name, no one actually ever asked to see the marriage certificate, but she always had it with her.

My current Malaysian passport has my maiden name and my GC has my married name. 

 

  1. Plane tickets need to match with the name on your passport. 
  2. Carry your marriage cert with you. I was asked to produce it one time. They just needed to check. 

You should be fine if you follow these 2 "rules". 

K1 Visa:


11-07-2012: I-129F sent

05-31-2013: Packet 3 received

10-23-2013: Packet 3 sent

11-19-2013: Interview

04-07-2014: POE Boston

05-07-2014: Got married after 12 years of LDR! :dancing:



AOS:


10-10-2014: Filed (together with combo EAD/AP)

10-27-2014: NOA received

12-10-2014: Request for Initial Evidence (RFI) received

11-12-2014: Biometrics Appt

02-03-2015: RFI received by USCIS

02-25-2015: Notice of Potential Interview Waiver Case letter received

(completely forgot): GC received. Resident since 07/04/2015.
