There used to be an option to call the passport service center and expedite the application for a fee even though application was initially submitted for regular processing.

Given the current wait times, this may be worth a try!

I’m really unsure what to do right now because we wanted to visit parents in Germany in the next months. I imagine in July or August regular flights will resume but we can’t fly without a passport. I’m debating if we should just file now and will have to wait months — or wait until the expedited option becomes available which ultimately could be faster.

But I imagine they might not open the expedited option even after kicking into the other normal gears. Any thoughts on this?

You can apply for a regular passport now and then upgrade for the "expedited" option later by calling the passport services number

OR

just wait and apply for expedited option when it becomes available.

They did not stated that anywhere ,expedited is suspended!

After two months, status changed from "Not Found" to "In Process." That is an improvement, under the circumstances.

Here is the latest:

https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/need-passport/status.html

It says:

"As of Thursday, June 11, a total of 11 passport agencies and centers are entering phase one of our three-phase reopening plan. Go to our Passport Agency and Center page for more information."

2020_06_10_General_Status.jpg.a0e7af2db47b703d230134d7e657acf8.jpg

and here are the Phases:

https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/passport-help/faqs.html

where it says -

3. What services can I expect in each phase of reopening?

We are working to resume normal operations in phases. Each passport agency and center will open on a different date based on local conditions:

Phase 1:  Limited staff return to work, allowing us to resume limited processing of applications we already received. Applications will be processed on a first in, first out basis. We will continue to prioritize services for customers with life-or-death emergencies. Customers must wear cloth face coverings in all common areas, including our lobbies, and observe strict social distancing. During phase one, we will continue to recommend customers wait to submit new or renewal applications as delays will continue.

Phase 2: Most staff will return to work, and will process applications on a first in, first out basis, beginning with the oldest applications. Staff and customers should wear cloth face coverings in all common areas, including our lobbies, and continue to observe social distancing.

Phase 3: All remaining Passport Services staff return to work. We will continue to address applications on a first in, first out basis, focusing on the oldest applications. Staff and customers may wear cloth face coverings in common areas and we will encourage social distancing. We also plan to resume expedited processing in this phase.

Why this for the profile pic?  Often in movies and on TV when they show Hawaii they show this beach/view. So, instead of doing Kauai or some other locale, we decided to do here, so that whenever some show shows Hawaii and this view, we will see where we were married.

Curb your enthusiasm as this will still take several weeks, if not months. But yes, there's reason for excitement because it is starting to move. :)
