So you can get benefits you qualify for. For example, if applying to schools you might want to access scholarships etc that are for citizens only and any other kind of benefits. Otherwise they'll have that you are still an LPR.

So first - There are very few of these kinds of things that distinguish between citizens and LPRs. Both are considered domestic students by colleges and qualify for all the same funding. Maybe, some kind of privately endowed scholarship that specifies for citizens only, I’ve never come across one of those?

But second and more important - you’re missing the point that the SSN record does not determine whether or not you are a citizen, no school is going to somehow deny your citizenship because of the SSN when you have proof of being a USC (passport or naturalization certificate).

As someone who is currently looking for graduate school funding, yes there are many for citizens only. I never said anything about denying citizenship however they do recommend that your ss information is correct. Schooling was simply one benefit and I used it because of my own experience with seeking funding in 3 different immigration categories over the years. There are other benefits that are tied to SSA and citizenship that I've read but they never stuck in my mind because they don't apply to me. I'm missing no points. You might be tho.  Being particularly pendantic about my chosen example misses the point of, there are benefits tied to having the correct SSA information.

Interesting, my daughter is at college and I help her with all her admin, never yet seen anything that is for citizens only and anyway you know, if there is, a passport is proof of that anyway. By all means go ahead and update your SSN as soon as you can, but I’ve yet to find any concrete examples other than name changes and actual SSI benefits where the SSN update is what matters. Proof of citizenship is what matters. Speaking from the perspective of naturalized citizens who have voted, done tax returns, worked etc. if i find something I or my family can’t do because SSN hasn’t been updated I’ll be sure to update the thread.

That is intriguing, it might be more a graduate school thing. When my husband was doing his undergrad, it seemed he qualified for all the same federal aid stuff that citizens could get.

Wondering about this as well. Is it absolutely necessary to update the SSN? I assumed the number stayed the same regardless of status?

I assume there is a reason they tell you to do it, I just haven’t figured out why it needs to be changed for anyone who hasn’t had a name change or needs to draw citizen-only social security benefits. I have heard of people who have gone for many years without changing it.

What is also odd to me, is that when we were told about this at the ceremony, they told us to wait a few weeks before doing so for the records to update at the SSA. If the records update why do we need to go in and do it?!

Is it because when you apply for a new job and when the prospective employer run your i-9 through the gov site, it checks the SSA records to make sure what you put down on your job application ("US citizen") matches the SSA record? Also if someone needs to apply for a new driver's license (e.g. after moving to another state), many DMVs also check the gov database to verify if you are the person who you say you are. Not sure if anyone managed to successfully get a new driver's license without updating citizenship status with SSA.

Well, if we try get new jobs or move states before SS is updated I’ll let you know.

i don’t have a problem with updating it btw, I just don’t particularly want to send my naturalization certificate through the mail unnecessarily. And I haven’t yet seen anything that compels me to to do it urgently rather than wait till offices reopen for in person services.

I heard that when employers run e-verify, it links to USCIS. When we become US citizen, our record is automatically updated with USCIS. Not sure about SSA, but when we apply for jobs that require US citizenship (gov jobs), it matters.

I will update SSA once it is open. Wonder I should make a trip to DMV and spend a couple of hours to update my record.

My timeline so far if anyone finds it useful. Applied at the USPS last Wednesday, 3rd February. My application showed up as received on the status checking website on the 9th February. I didn't pay for the expedited service, so it's showing 10-12 weeks for completion.

Quick update in case anyone finds it useful. I got a notification yesterday, 2/24/2021, that my application was approved. This morning, 2/25/2021, I got another notification that my passport has shipped. The USPS tracker is not showing anything at the moment but hopefully that will update later today.

So, in short, mine took around 3 weeks non-expedited. I hope everyone else's is as speedy.

wow that was quick.Congrates!

I have applied on Feb 09,2021 and still no sign of update on the website and upon checking with Passport customer service number, they are still unable to find my application and asked me to wait since they are delayed with the processing. My bank cheque has not been cashed yet! Don't know how to keep track of my passport application? Should I be worried?

I’ve heard someone waiting for a month before his/her status shows up. Hopefully yours won’t take that long. I would give it 1 or 2 more weeks before worrying. Just like my NC which stills haven’t been received 3+ weeks after my passport arrival, I’ve seen recently many people waiting for over a month before eventually receiving it. So no worrying for now, just annoyed a little bit. But again we re still in the pandemic so lots of stuff isn’t going as we wish, just take a deep breath and keep our fingers crossed. We’ll all get through this.

Thanks MrKo for your kind words. I will wait until next week and check with local post office as to what's going with the package? Hopefully until then DOS has received my application.

Btw where did you file your passport case?I mean which state?

PA, but I believe my passport application was processed in NH, because that's what is on the passport envelope. You can check with the postal office to ask where they sent your passport application to, they should have a tracking record. If your passport application ends up being processed in New Orleans chances are you'll get everything back quickly as that's what other people's timelines here show.

Okay I will check with USPS tomorrow. My other concern is that I have filled passport from NYS and within 2 weeks I am relocating to TX .In DS-11 form, I have added Texas address as my mailing address, so hopefully they will send my passport/NC to the address mentioned in the DS-11.

They should send everything back to the mailing address you list on your form, nothing to worry about.
