WHat are we supposed to update at the DMV? What should I tell them when I get there? Also what documents do I need to take alone with me? Thanks

No need to if you don't need to update or renew your drivers license. Apparently in some states you get a different drivers license when you're not yet a citizen, so when you become a citizen you go to DVM to update your info and get a new license. That doesn't happen here in CA, I became a citizen last March and will only go to DMV once my DL is about to expire around July this year, so I can renew mine. I also had a minor name change so I want/need a DL in my new name.

If your current DL is not REAL ID compliant , you should update your Driver's Lic.   Starting May 3, 2023, older type's of Driver's License can not be used for Federal ID - in other words - You can not board a plane as TSA will not accept it.    They will accept your passport, but many people don't carry their passport all the time.   You will need to show your Passport and whatever other local document you state requires as proof.    This is a nationwide issue  since the federal gov passed the REAL ID Act.

You do not have to do this, but if you don't you leave yourself open for an unpleasant surprise later.    The Feds have extended the REAL ID deadline as least 3 times now and some states made it on the naughty list with special extension dates as their Legislative bodies could not seem to pass the  required local laws.  However at some point it will happen.

Exactly, not a requirement and you can use your passport book or passport card for the exact same purpose.

Well, for me my DL was not expiring or had any limitations on it since I had an EB 10 yr Green card but DL was not Real ID compliant. I decided to update it bc my new job requires me to be on military bases and federal buildings so I needed a Real ID compliant DL (you can get a real ID even if you are not  a citizen just gotta have the right docs). I went to PennDot with my US passport, Naturalization certificate, current DL, SSN card with no restrictions after GC and it was updated in 10 mins. Paid $30 real ID fee and $30 DL fees. No issues encountered. You may not be in my situation so you probably good to go.

Hi everyone, here's my emergency passport journey.

After getting my citizenship I was not in a rush to get a passport, due to covid, and no travel plans.

Later last year my boss told me we would have to go on a business trip within the next 2 weeks. I froze, when I got home that day I started researching and I realized I could get a passport if I had my trip booked, which I did.

Next morning I called the passport agency and explained my situation. Since my trip was in 10 days from the day I called I was able to schedule an appointment. I could only schedule an appointment 3 days before my trip (there's a 72 hours rule), I was a little nervous but hoping for the best. On the day of my appointment I had with me, my flight tickets, my citizenship certificate, passport picture, and a bunch of work/trip related documents. Everyone was very nice, the first teller checked my docs then the second one took my passport application, citizenship certificate and passport picture, and asked me to pay the fee which was something around $250 - $270. After that she told me I could come back in 4 hours or the next morning. Around 3:30PM that day I went back and my passport and passport card with my citizenship certificate were there waiting for me.

It was quick and efficient, I hope this helps someone that might be going thru something similar.

I'm also planning to go with the regular speed. I was just curious if the mail in cost is extra and is paid by the applicant?

Yes, extra should be paid by the applicant to the DOS(Dept of State), not to USPS

In other words, the extra cost will be included in the check that you are writing as a passport fee into the application.
