Hi guys. A pleasant surprise regarding my passport application status which I would like to let you know through my timeline update:

Service Requested: Routine service.

passport application date: 25th June, 2021.

Application In process date: 21st July, 2021.

Passport shipped date: 18th August, 2021.

and on top of that, they sent it through Expedited Priority mail which I never paid for. Things are moving quite faster, if you have requested routine service which in my case is true. Good-luck guys…

Congratulations!  Did you happen to know the first two digits of your locator number? What location was your application processed at? Thanks

That’s great. That took about two and a half weeks longer than my daughter’s expedited service (applied 29 June shipped 5 Aug) - way better than the 6 week difference they tell you.

Pre Covid I got my passport in about 3 weeks with routine service - hopefully it’s  headed back that way.

It looks like that the processing location of your application was DC.

Looking at your timeline, it shows that the expedited cost only affects how quickly they begin processing your application, but not the processing speed itself.

For expedited service, it sounds like it takes a few days before they begin processing. For routine service, it is taking most people about a little over 2 weeks to begin the processing. But, once they begin processing at least at that location, it seems like it does not make any significant difference whether the application is expedited or routine because it is taking the same time while it is in processing. If that's always the case,  I would say the expedited service is over-rated unless these 2-3 extra weeks makes a big difference for your travel plans.

I think (1) times in general have improved - some people here were reporting expedited done in 3 weeks (2) the differential has improved as well, reading back not too long ago it was easily a month or more different. Btw, pre Covid about 3 weeks was indeed usually the difference between expedited (day or two) and routine (around 3 weeks usually)

I didn’t know that there was the option to get tracking for the application packet on its way to the processing center along with faster shipping to there. Does this mean it’ll take dramatically longer for my documents to get there?

FYI I believe every “premium” postal service - anything you pay extra for - has tracking included.

There’s no tracking number on my receipt so I guess I don’t have that going for me. So now I’m wondering if there’s any way to track it otherwise.

Routine service:

applied at USPS on 7/17

status changed to in process on 7/30

check cashed on 8/2

locator begin with 50, where is it being processed? :)

approved on 8/17

delivered on 8/20

A little surprise - door to door - 5 weeks for Routine service.

I and my wife applied our 1st time passport; my kids renew their minor passports.

All arrived at the same time.

Good luck, guys.

it was shipped with priority mail.

return address on the label is from Los Angeles, CA.

tracking info on Web shows it was from Tucson, AZ.

So locator 50 means either Los Angeles, CA or Tucson, AZ.
