Global Entry with different GC Name & Passport Name

Has anyone here applied for Global Entry with a different name in their passport and Green Card.  My wife got approved for her GC today and she will be applying for GE once she receives her GC.

If you have been in a similar situation, which name did you use on the the Global Entry application?   Her maiden name is still listed on her Ukrainian passport and for a number of reasons it is much easier to keep it that way - its a pain in the a** to change it in Ukraine and it doesn't really matter.   However, in the US she wants to use her married name and thats what her GC is listed as.   If anyone else has been in a similar situation before, please advise and thank you for your help!

Since US GE system uses GC’s info and not the foreign passport’s info, i would say one has to use the name on the GC. Foreign passport is for travel and one can travel with passport in maiden name and GC on married name, just need to bring the marriage certificate.

I see and agree with arguments from both sides but I can't find anything out there that states this is the way to do.  Anyone else?

I think for GE it has to match the document used for re-entry i.e. the GC.  However, with GE you also get PreCheck, and then you have to use the name that is on the ticket, so if you get GE in the GC name, but the airline tickets are in the name on the foreign passport, then she would not be able to use PreCheck.  My wife was in that situation for three plus years as like Ukraine, Russian passports are difficult to affect a name change due to marriage.  When my wife naturalized and got her US passport, we then applied for GE using the married name on that passport.

Good Luck!

P.S. also keep in mind that if your wife has a 2 year GC, then when she goes through ROC and travels on an expired GC and extension letter, she cannot use GE or the kiosks. Therefore, it might be better to wait until she either gets her 10yr GC or naturalizes.

Thank you, when we apply we will apply under the GC name.  When she flies domestically within the US she will fly on her GC name and when she flies internationally she will fly with her maiden name.

I already have TSA pre-check and Interestingly enough my wife and I have travelled a few times within the USA while her GC was pending.  When we booked our tickets together she would also get TSA pre-check, i think because I already have it and TSA sometimes issues precheck to the other companions on the same ticket.  It is kind of comical because at the time she wasn't even eligible to apply for TSA pre-check but they would give it to her.

Understand your reasoning for waiting to apply but I have a few travel credit cards and all of them offer GE for free so it wont cost me anything and at least it will be good for a few years.  We do quite a bit of travelling and I hate waiting at CPB when returning from an international trip.

As a clarification, while ROC is pending I think that you can still use GE, you just can’t use the kiosks. Instead you have to use the GE card to skip ahead of the line to see an officer.

That is possible.  My wife did not have GE until after she finished naturalization.

Did this with a friend  . . .  Global Entry in passport name GC in married name. No issues.  While you can use GE card as ID for PreCheck, just use what matched the domestic ticket.  Copy of Marriage Certificate in the purse just in case.

Before Mary had her GE she always got TSApre when traveling with me on same PNR.

If you use the credit card offer make sure you sign up via the portal of the credit card.  My mom forgot and Chase didn't cover the charge without disputing it with Chase.

Thank you!  Very helpful.  Very intersting that the GE name would have a different name then the GC.  But i guess it makes sense since they want the GE card to match the passport.

Thank you again and I will check out the portal.

I did it before with the Chase Reserve Card a few years ago and dont remember there being a portal.  For this one, I am using my United Card but I will definately check it out.

Yes GE is tied to the passport.

I did Mary's via AMEX Platinum.   On Chase Sapphire Reserve, log in and go to benefits and there is a link from there.   If you use that it is automatic.   I only wish they covered NEXUS as that is half as much and includes Canada( Only for USC not available for LPR unless Canadian)

When I was reading through the instructions on using global entry for perm residents it states to insert your Green Card, not passport.

Obviously your way worked but its just interesting.

As a U.S. lawful permanent resident, which document do I use at the Global Entry kiosk?

U.S. lawful permanent residents must use their I-551 permanent resident card at the Global Entry kiosk.

It is very likely that the GC when issued will be the same as the passport name, visa name, etc.  That was my husband's experience recently.  DOS goes by the passport name exactly for issuing visas, so that will likely be the name on the GC as well.  So GE will be in the same name as the other two documents to avoid problems when traveling.

This is only true if the GC recipient does not request for a last name change at the interview prior to receiving an decision on their case. During our interview the officer asked if we would like to change my wife's last name from her maiden to mine to which we yes so the GC she now has is under my last name. Everything from her SS to her driver's license is now under my last name. Her passport is still in her maiden name. And the original K1 Visa is in her maiden name.

When filling out the application for Global Entry nowhere does it definitively give you the option of choosing what last name is going to be registered in their system. So I don't think you can really make that choice based on what we filled out in the application process.  It only asks you to provide information for specific documents (GC, passport, etc.) with no indicators stating  what name is going to be used. Maybe I missed something but I wasn't able to find any. Our GE interview is next month so my plan is to ask the officer what he/she recommends we do or if that's even a choice we can make.

Another thing of note is that interview openings are sporadic at best. I live in Houston and when I got my GE 8 years ago no one was applying so it was a breeze to get an interview at the airport. Now, there are no openings in the near future and even if there was you can no longer get to the office without buying a plane ticket and getting past security. Be prepared to either fly to another city for the best dates or do a walk in at one of the major airports as you return from an international flight (this option doesn't work for domestic flights).

Oh and one last thought. I used a MileagePlus Explorer card and did not go through the portal and was still immediately refunded the application fee. Apparently, the card automatically recognizes origin of the fee. Just thought I'd share our experience so ymmv. If you want to be safe it would probably be best to go through the portal.
