Joe Biden, The Democrats' Bag Man

I & I Editorial Board - January 10, 2020

Joe Biden says he is 100% in favor of banning plastic bags in the U.S.  At this point, it might be better to ask Biden and the rest of the Democrats running for president what they would allow Americans to have.  It would likely be a short list.

Biden's position on the issue was revealed last week at an Iowa campaign stop [...]

If we are scared of the concept, we could always seek some input from the 127 other countries that have chosen to regulate or outright ban single use plastic bags. It's not a bad idea all in all, and pretty easy to work around, even if you really love plastic bags.  I'm having a bigger issue giving up single use plastic water bottles, but I am getting better with that.

Well.since the the vast majority of plastic in the oceans come from Asia I think we should get them to regulate their countries first.

I think plastics in our environment is a much more pressing issue than climate change. When you visit a place like Cebu that everywhere water meets land there are piles of plastic trash and then travel to an Island like Siquijor in the same country, which does not allow plastics, the contrast is dramatic.

Everytime I eat at my local fav BBQ joint, at which they use nothing but plastic and styrofoam, I think of the mountain of non-biodegradable trash just that one place puts in our landfills every day. Scar

I know right.... I remember one time I got a bottle come and they put it in the small plastic bag with the straw. Once I was done they told me to just throw it in the ditch which handles the water runoff and goes directly into the river. It is sad really.

I have also seen and heard that the threat of plastic pollution is far.more than we know. It literally permeates our entire society and life.

Many of them do. Some don't. Are you saying we should wait for all of them so we can be last?

We already know that single use plastics are a stupid concept. I'm not sold on any benefit of waiting out those that are worse than us.

I agree with that, and I think getting the plastic mess under control is a lot easier to do than some of the other environmental issues. I used to get mad at the whole idea, because I would forget those reusable shopping bags at home, but I have adjusted now, and it gives me a good excuse to bag my own groceries, which I would rather do anyway.

No, we need to do something about single use plastic and plastic general. Since it is already being verified that many of the plastics are becoming small beads in the ocean and ending up in fish's stomachs.

I think we need to start with the large polluters then work out way down.

I hate takeout in stryofoam, when  eating our and the leftovers come back in compostable take out container, I say "thanks for the compostable box, it makes it easier to throw in the compost when I find this in my refrigerator three weeks later"

I guess I'm pretty used to just always having bags with me, or paying a small fee (10 cents) for a reusable one when I forget to bring one, and then I'll reuse that one.

I almost always have one with me that is very thin (think: parachute material) which I can stuff in a handbag. If I go major shopping, I just bring bigger bags with me. I have thermal lined ones for when I know I need them. I'm not sure why BYOB is so controversial. It's seriously not difficult. And yes, paper bags are good too, and I reuse them.
