Some big assumptions in the Fortune article, but the basics are that fair trade is a two way street.

Also, conveniently ignored the most relevant parts which have been argued multiple times (while telling us what the story isn't):

Quote

The U.S. Trade Representative’s office last month proposed punitive duties on $2.4 billion in imports from France of sparkling wines and other goods after concluding that a new French digital services tax would harm U.S. companies.

Those tariffs would come on top of 25% tariffs already imposed on a wide range of European imports, including Airbus jets, European cheeses, wines and other products in a dispute with the European Union over aircraft subsidies. Washington last month said it could raise those tariffs to 100% and subject additional EU products to the tariffs unless a settlement was reached.

In June, French President Emmanuel Macron signed into law a 3% “digital services” tax on revenues generated in France by tech companies making more than 750 million euros (about $833 million) a year. That levy, collected at the end of December, falls heavily on American giants Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon, which have frequently been criticized for sidestepping local taxes by domiciling core operations in lower-tax nations. In December, Trump warned that he would retaliate with 100% tariffs on goods including French wine; those higher levies could soon become reality if a truce isn’t reached.

For obvious reasons. Woes me 200% price of muh differentiated wine while Trump negotiates a better deal for American workers, companies, and products.. orange man bad! Economic armageddon! 😂 This script plays out on every trade issue, because OMB narrative drives the emotional knee jerk. Thankfully Trump ignores the background screeching noises, that's what he was elected to do.

Like I said, I could not care less what people choose to spend their disposable income on.  If folks want to buy French wine let them, it is still available, it will just cost a little more.  The entire point of the articles linked is that the US was taken advantage of with respect to trading, and it is time to stop taking it without fighting back.

Such a simple concept.  It's almost like someone somewhere is making something out of nothing, all because...  TDS!

Did you even read that article about why the American wine industry is going to be affected, or are you just guessing?

Why does NO ONE care about the American wine industry here?

Is Reuters acceptable?

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trade-france/u-s-wine-industry-fears-armageddon-of-costs-from-tariffs-on-french-imports-idUSKBN1Z7014

How about Fortune?

https://fortune.com/2020/01/10/french-wine-tariffs-burgundy-importers/

Just because you don't care about or for French wine doesn't mean that American jobs aren't going to be impacted. This isn't a elitist v. "real" Americans fight (what, I'm not a real American because I like French wine?) it's a "why is this tariff being put in place" issue. If the issue is about Boeing, why are the tariffs so much higher (25% currently, up to 100% potentially) for wine than they are for the air industry (10%)? Oh, boo hoo hoo, rich liberals crying into their wine. That is not the story. Our own domestic market is going to be affected -- we are going to feel this more than the French. It has nothing -- in my opinion, for me-- to do with Trump as a person. This is just dumb and shooting ourselves in the foot.

Look, I love Californian wine. I drink it. I just spent this past weekend in Paso Robles drinking quite a bit of it. But not everything I like in terms of wine is domestic, even though I would say the bulk (~75%) of what I drink is from California/Oregon. These tariffs aren't going to get us US wine rebranded as "Freedom Wine" -- Americans -- real Americans -- are going to pay with it at the register AND in jobs.

Whatever, you guys are going to hate on me because I'm supposedly an elitist. I've got an apartment to set up and it's a beautiful day in Santa Monica. :) I can see from Google Maps there's a great wine bar around the corner -- maybe I'll pop in.

I don't drink that red vinegar, and only cook with it rarely.  I suspect the US grape growers will be sufficient for my lifetime.

Doesn't affect me, and all it will do is cause a spike in French wine prices for a while.  If it continues TOO long (Which I doubt), then demand will decrease, and American wines will experience an increase in sales.  Free market, and all that.

Do they have a wine cave?  Is there a transgender bathroom? Is there a basement that is serving Satanist pizza with a listing of swampy globalist peodophilies who like to attend pizza parties? Is AOC scheduled to appear with  throuple? No?  Well then you really don't have a topic now do you 😅

So you are ok with levying taxes on modest income families who want to enjoy a French wine, they really should , in your mind, bbe drinking a shopisticated Penfolds wine because you know what tastes better.

Sounds elitist to me.

Modest income families shouldn’t be wasting their money on alcohol.

I don't know -- possible with the unisex bathroom. Those are not uncommon.

Not a wine cave -- I peeked in about 20 minutes ago on the way back from the library to try and get cards. Looked pretty bright and airy with a big patio. Also no pizzas. Can't confirm AOC or throuples.

Menu looked like a lot of charcuterie stuff, saucisson sec, speck, duck prosciutto, plus a nice selection of cheeses from the US, California, UK, etc. I would have gone but we are having Italian tonight, apparently. I did check and make sure "Italian" wasn't Chef Boyardee!

That my man

My favorite was, the middle class will have to pay more for French wine. I mean how gullible do you have to be.to fall for that basket of horse feathers.  It's not life saving insulin it's wine, there are 1000's of other choices. "OMG the middle class may have to drink Domestic, Trump is evil" Why should they get to slap a a high tariff on our product and we let their product in for a fraction f that. Anybody with half a noodle knows thats a bad deal.

Scenario one- We raise Tariffs to match theirs.  That mythical middle class family who would struggle to afford French wine (LMA0), now buys one of the many 100s of domestic brands. The wine producer has to expand. Well that benefits--- The wine equipment producing manufacturer,  the company that makes the boxes the wine is packed in, the company that prints the wine labels, The company that makes wine bottles, the company that makes corks or caps, the trucking company that hauls the wine to market, the local workers who pay taxes in America and buy from local business,  I could go on and on.

Scenario 2- They lower their tariffs to match our and it opens up new markets in Europe--- The wine producer has to expand.

This such an elementary concept it boggles my mind, that even the most ardent Trump haters can't grasp it.  Jesus H my mind cant get around this, to hades with anything good for America if Trump is doing it insanity

Oh naw you didn't. That was strong

Regardless if we open more foreign markets or people buy more domestic. There is no downside, other than Joe Sixpack not being able to afford french wine

If they are worried about the price, why buy it.  Personally, Aussie and Kiwi wines are the best, French wine is like vinegar.

There are some good Argentinean wines out there as well. You should try them. But personally I love me some California reds.

The transgender bathroom is just overblown hoopla. The majority of businesses just made a male and female bathroom two unisex bathrooms that's all. I wish I could have a throuple....

You don't go up to Solvang to winery hop???? Some friends of mine took us up there once to winery hop with them for the weekend. It was a good time the only bad thing was that we had kids with us. They were apart of a couple wine clubs up there until he got himself a new truck and has to give up the clubs to pay the truck payments.

You are living good if you have a apartment in Santa Monica. Do you live close to the pier, and is it 1 or 2 bedroom? I used to love driving up the PCH to Malibu on the PCH then crossing over to the 101 using Kanan Dume Rd. That road is the best one to use because it's 2 lanes each way almost all the way through.
