Why the passport agency took my fiance naturalization certificate?

Hello VJ members,  

 

I wanted to ask, so when my fiance went to Passport Agency in Detroit yesterday, the lady that handled his documents took the original naturalization certificate of my fiance. And she just said that they will kept it,  and unfortunately my fiance forgot to ask like are they going to mail it back or no. 

 

So, anyone has the same experience like him?  And are they going to mail it back?  I know I shouldn't worry as we can apply for the replacement of NC.  I just don't want to spend again the money for that 😔

This is normal, and you will get the certificate back.

The certificate and the passport may come back in separate mailings.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I was asked to turn in my original marriage certificate & original naturalization certificate as well. I haven't received it back in the mail. I go to my mail box everyday. Passport application tracker only shows that it is 'in-process'. I can't go to the DMV or the social security office b'coz I dont have my original documents. Not sure what is going on and what I should do. Can anyone guide please? Thanks

Well how long has it been since you applied? It's at least a few weeks before you get them back for normal processing. A little sooner if expedited.

Hey..  Can you give a little more detail of your timeline?  

 

My fiance made an appointment first and he got the schedule at 08.30 am in Detroit Passport Agency.  

 

He went to Detroit,  and when he applied for the passport, they didn't say anything when the lady took his original naturalization certificate as my fiance forgot to ask about it also. 

He expedited it as he have upcoming flight on Wednesday 15th January 2020.

 

He keep checking the status and still it says " In Process" even though it's already in shipping.  

 

So,  he got the passport+original naturalization certificate at the same time on 14th January 2020 at 10:05am by UPS. 

 

You may also receive separate mailings. one with your citizenship documents, one with your newly issued passport. Do contact NPIC if you dont receive the second mailing (which is your original document within) 10 business days of the previous mailing.

I submitted my application on 12/23. Thanks. I guess, I just have to wait for another 2 weeks at least. I opted for standard 6-8 weeks processing.

It's a great relief to know that he got his passport & the documents at the same time!

I got my passport today. Came in as a priority mail. 

Citizenship application sent in on 12/23. Normal processing. 

There is a printed leaflet inside, titled 'Where are my documents?' (guess, too many people were calling their number asking the same question) It reads- "If you applied for a passport book & passport card, you may receive three separate mailings; one with your returned citizenship evidence, one with your newly issued passport book, and one with your newly issued passport card."

So, again, keep waiting for the original documents.

So, again, keep waiting for the original documents. 

If you just received your passport today then just wait 10 days or at least 2 weeks after your previous mailing. Don't worry,  you'll get it soon.  🙏

I went to the SSA office this morning and they didn't need my original certificate, I had it with me and she said it doesn't matter copy or original is fine.  But this might be different per office or the person that is helping you.
