Hello, I am from Algeria, my visa interview for an F1 visa was on the 2nd of January, the interview went better than my last one (I got refused last time) I dunno what the Visa Officer saw but suddenly at the end of the interview he asked to see my acceptance letter to the university, it was totally out of place I mean he could've asked earlier since he asked all kinds of questions before it , I could see the look in his face changing before he asked that, luckily I had it with me so I gave it to him, he took his time reading it then he gave me a paper that says I was rejected under 221g and he kept the passport, he told me nothing after just that he will keep in mind my date of entry which is on the 31st of January, I keep checking my status and it hasn't been updated since the day of the interview, I just wanted to share this here I know I still have more time to wait, so if anyone got any comment for this feel free to comment ^^

The fact that your passport was kept by the embassy, it's a good sign. When I was issued 221g letter, my passport was rejected (given to me). I was told by email to return it. The day I return it, I was almost issued a chip to pickup my Visa. Suddenly, it changed, my passport was again return to me for the second time and asked to still wait on the administrative process. My Visa was later issued and I am now in the US. Keep the hope, wishing you all the best in this journey.

Do not mind the time, it varies. It takes two weeks to 90 days plus. The fact that your passport is kept by them, it might be shorter. Normally, when your passport is return, it takes longer time than when your passport is kept by them. Mine took like three to four months. But unlike yours, I was also issued ds-5535 form along with 221g letter to fill in and submit which I did. This form (ds-5535) has to do with deeper background check. My administrative process case was more deeper than yours and I was successful. So in my view, you will soon get the victory, just keep praying and hoping for the best.
