Hello VJ's,

I was wondering from people who have had to deal with the consulate in Lagos, Nigeria. My husband is still in Lagos and I am here in the US will he need my original documents like my birth certificate and things like that our original marriage certificate because I have all those things with me and he has copies I want to know if he needs all originals for his interview (he doesn't have a date yet just getting prepared) .

Another question as you all know the trip is very expensive will I need to be there with him for his interview. I have heard that Lagos consulate is very difficult is this true any and all experiences and advice is greatly appreciated. I will do whatever I need to do.

It is best to send him the original documents. When we got married in Lagos they refused to give us two original marriage licenses. We took the original to xerox and they made a near perfect copy (the paper texture was the only difference) and we went back to city hall and had them put the seal on the copy. I took the original home with me and i'm still considering sending it back to him for the interview. I also ordered another copy of my birth certificate from vital records (that's how my state does it) and i gave that to him too. I also left him with my original divorce decree from a previous marriage. I have heard of people being denied for not having original documents and I don't want to take that chance.

As far as being present for the interview, you could go either way on this. It is HIS interview and you are not "required" to be there. Recently I was talking with another VJ member and she heard that someone did go for the interview and the officer had additional questions about her life, she was there to provide the answers and they believe that is the only reason they were saved from a denial.

I don't plan on going to the interview.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice it helps alot. I know what you mean about two originals we did the same thing as you. Is the best way to send all the documents is by DHL I'm so scared of things getting lost in the mail you know how mail is over there. I don't think you or your husband have anything to worry about you guys have a child together right? Well I just don't know what to do to go or to stay I was planning on going if problems arise God forbid but if I don't have to I want to save our money for when he gets his visa and his plane ticket home. What do you think?
