Further to the Chamber of Commerce networking idea:  the Houston area has MANY smaller, "regional" Chambers.  Katy/Fort Bend (if that's the precise name) is one such.  You'll perhaps get more personal attention (and potentially a job closer to where you now live) if you focus on the regional Chambers nearest you.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

People may also be hesitant when they see the resume and all prior experience is from a different country, they might judge the situation unfairly thinking you need sponsorship or something.

 

The policies for sure are different so you'll have to study up on that.

 

But I think you have to start from the ground up, somewhat in that field would still be preffered.

This is such a good idea. I am in Sales Management and have been apart of all local chambers for years.
My clients our IT and I had a few jobs for Ryan to start interviewing at after authorization to work. 
He has already went with me to a few networking events to meet them in person to see if he would be a good fit. 
He happened to hit it off really well with a client of mine (IT) in the Gvt sector and they want him to start in June. 
Chambers are such a great way to get your name out in the job market and meet potential employers. 
Good luck OP, you will find work. I firmly believe in networking yourself to find what fits for you and employer.

When we got to the US over a year ago there wasn't any pressure on my wife to work.   She really wasn't sure what she wanted to do.   In her home country she had been a nanny and elder caregiver.  After a month she was getting restless and put up ads in several web sites like care.com. She didn't get any traction.  I'm also in IT and one of our datacenter clients has after hour mixers every month.  I brought her to the first one and introduced her and thru natural conversation people asked what she did and she said "babysitting, for now".   About 24 hours after that she was getting calls.  Two months later she decided to get certified for caregiving and she has been doing that now for almost a year.  Now she has more confidence and is looking into a LPN nursing program.

 

So networking works.   Mary had a hard time getting out of her comfort zone but a day after she was booking clients.  And now she is very interested in a professional career,

September 7, 2021 I-751 Interview, Sept 8 Approved and Card Being Produced

Didn't catch the white collar. My wife is over qualified for most openings around here and she didn't want to "not" list her abilities and degrees.  And if you don't list them, you have big time gaps in the time-frame.  She is basically working now for her insurance.

How can one be overqualified to do a good job?

Say to the interviewers (or in the cover letter), "Tell you what:  if I'm doing TOO good a job for you after 90 days, you can terminate my employment on that basis."

I loathe hearing that I’m “over qualified”.  Please leave the decision of whether or not I want to work for you up to me. 
 

From an employer standpoint, they don’t want someone overqualified because they don’t want to waste time and resources in training you, only to have you up and leave once a job more suited to your skill level comes along.

If i have a front desk job and they have a degree and experience in HR management, theyre not going to be happy with my $13/hr part time job and I have to train someone new in a month? No thanks. I'll hire the person who is happy to have a job period and tries hard everyday to improve and not looking for something better.

I think many employers, who look at a resume and see you have 2 BS degrees, they think you will move on the first chance you get.  And for some, they think you are smarter than the interviewer and looking to get their job.

Yeah. I used to think "overqualified" was a dumb thing, but now that I've had to train people repeatedly, I definitely understand why an employer would be reluctant to hire someone overqualified. Employee turnover is something I try to avoid now...

A lot of people who come through my place of employment in the HR Dept come through temp agencies and then shortly after, get a full time position. You could look into those options? 

 

It took me 4 months to get a job within the field that I worked in my home country but at a much "lower" position. Three years later I've moved right back up the to level I was at in my home country. In the early days I made sure I did all I could to show my skills above and beyond what was required. Have a plan and work towards it. Don't give up. I know how difficult it can be.
