Birth certificate translation

Hi all,

My fiance and I were recently married. We are preparing our paper work for her change of status. We are confused about what to do for translating her birth certificate. She is from the Ukraine and her certificate is in Russian. I cannot find any info on what is considered proper translation. Can any help?

I used the same translation papers i received in Toronto. I got my polish birth certificate translated by the Polish Embassy.

Call a local embassy and see if they offer the same service. Mine was cheaper getting it done at the embassy then it was getting it done by a "professional"

Luckily we are egtting Renato's translated while still in Brazil by a certified translator. That means it will only cost us $20.

There are many translating services out there, and most of them have dealt with USCIS, so they know what to do. Of course two best options are getting the birth certificate translated back home, or at the embassy. I just had my birth certificate translated from Serbian, I did not want to use an on-line service, so I just found a local translator. All it took was a few phone calls. Good luck.

We did it ourselves and don't seem to have problem so far. I never saw anything from the USCIS that said anything had have any particular certification.

I translated my birth certificate myself, it was in ukrainian/russian (I was born in Ukraine), didn't have any troubles with it. If your wife decides to translate it herself she has to attach a statement that she's fluent in the languages that are translated and she swears all the information is correct and true and sign it.

There is no requirement that one must use a certified translator, only that the documents are translated by a person conversant and fluid in both the language and english and that they certify that.

it is written in the notice that the translator should certified that he or she is fluent in both langauages (English and the foreign language) so i think canybody can translate that just be sure that person is fluent in those languages....

I agree. My husband (Russian) just translated his birth certificate himself on both the K-1 and the AOS. No problems so far. Just make sure you attach an affidavidt saying you are fluent in both languages. Save some money and do it yourself if you feel comfortable.
