Even with the decent prospects of moving back to the US, I'd still never move back to CA. I have my preferences, and have a rather open mind, but I still have standards (for myself and family) that CA just doesn't meet even the minimum requirements for.

Well, there are a couple of reasons why we are here. First up, Alex works in a particular sliver of finance that keeps us in certain areas. Are there roles in other parts of the country? Sure, probably. But he is here on an L1 right now and until we marry and AOS he goes where they tell him to, which is why we left the Bay Area for SM. He had to take a step down when he joined this company -- he'd been unemployed for a while back in London after a venture he was started with partners went (as they say) "[vulgar synonym for boobies] up." The current role he's in started in London and he got transferred to CA after a while -- it's a great opportunity for us to be together, and when we eventually get his EAD they may promote him. Which opens up a whole new round of worry about another transfer, which we'll deal with when we get there. It's not like there are a ton of opportunities to do what he does outside of LA/NYC/SF/maaaaaaaybe Chicago (NOT moving there)/Boston (ditto, did my four years in New England and not doing a repeat). There are positions in other parts of the country but they would be considerable steps down. My own line of work is very portable -- wherever there are rich people with disposable income, I can do it.

 

Also, believe it or not, we like it here! Some of us do, I know that's hard to believe.  I'm happy you guys are happy where you are. Life would suck if we all liked the same stuff.

Terrifying to even consider. I assume it involves a bikini, because I recall the whole hoo-ha about the removal of bikini pics from the gallery for not being family friendly.

 

Come to think of it, I may have been the one to demand the removal of bikini pics because I was grumpy about having the Juicy Couture jogger bottoms removed from my siggie for not being family friendly. Consistency!

I had a spreadsheet at one point but I foolishly saved it on a laptop that has gone to meet its maker. I also used to care a lot more about UK people trying to circumvent the system (the user who kept pestering London for a new interview date and then got one when all the rest of us were patiently waiting in line, and the guy who claimed his MP got London to give out a interview date faster) and the straight up weirdos (the woman who was leaving her cushy job in the Home Counties to join her sorta-unemployed fiancé in AZ or NM who lived in his parents' basement, because he couldn't move to the UK because there aren't any good burritos there). I just can't summon the outrage these days.
