We didn't move to West Hollywood. We moved to Santa Monica. WeHo and SM are pretty clean, btw. They are both small cities separate from LA, and both are pretty wealthy. SM has its own police force, school district, etc. and quality of life is pretty good. We've only been here since Sunday but I am learning to like it. :) The worst so far has been the tourists -- they can cause congestion on sidewalks and get drunk and shout at night. (This has happened once, so not sure how frequent yet.)

It was a job related move. I was in two minds about coming -- I loved Berkeley and my job, and Alex gave me the space to figure out if I wanted to move with him or be together but physically apart. At first I decided to stay, but then I started to realize I was only staying because I wanted to be clear that I was my own woman, not following my man like a good wifey-to-be. But really what I needed to do was put myself first, and putting myself first meant being where I truly wanted to be, which is with him. I'd waited too long to be with him for many reasons, and now I was making another one just because I wanted to be seen as being independent, at the expense of being happy. I choose happy. :)

I think Jane Austin could have used that.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

My ex Voldy always said I have literary pretensions. :P

I am not sure if I should be honoured with the comparison.

I was asking that of Boiler, for his friends.   You're already living in that forsaken area, and I know exactly why you are moving.  I hope for both your sakes that you are able to escape before your 40s.

Oh, sorry. You-know-who said I always make it about me and I'm never happy unless all attention is directed towards me. :D

We'll see if we stay. It's sort of dependent on his work -- not a big finance hub here, so if things fizzle out here, it may be a move to New York or even to London. :dead:

London - meh.   No experience there.  NY?  A definite jump out of the frying pan into the fire.  Highly disrecommend.

I have experience in London, hence the :dead:. That's why the ex and I did the K1 -- I was not moving to the UK if it meant splitting time between there and Suffolk which was bo-ring. London was just crowded and chaotic and there was so much making do with terrible plumbing in old buildings. NYC I have only visited but I'm not crazy about it for similar reasons as London, but the plumbing is probably better!

I mean, I have enough for us to just "retire" now and live wherever, but (1) he has continuing obligations to his ex-wife and daughter financially that he doesn't want me to have to pay for and (2) I have a suspicion that he might feel emasculated if he never had to pay for anything ever again. And we both want to feel useful in the world, not just coasting along. Work is good for the soul -- that Protestant work ethic at work! (Which is funny because I am an atheist raised by an atheist and an agnostic.)

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Do you think it's time to ask a mod (T-Bone) to change the name of this thread to "Layla's life in Southern Cal"?

LOL

Some of my replies have got me into trouble.....And some have fallen into the type before thinking category.

Back on subject, well the new topic title so I guess I am ahead of the change, must admit her age threw me as for whatever reason I thought she was significantly younger.

We all have to live our own lives, and it will not be that long before she hits 40, now I know it varies but for many that is a significant turning point and often when reality catches up. Going to be harder as the need for filler increases. I recollect a sort of similar conversation coming from a lady who must have been 50, nothing was said but I could tell we were all thinking the same, by that time it becomes delusional.

Positive things could happen but the odds are declining. And I seriously doubt there is anything anybody else can say that would help.

Well, as usual I've had a busy week and have not been able to keep up with VJ.  Wanted to make a comment about Meghan and Harry but alas I am too late.  My own fault.

Ah, so this was for a move rather than a visit? There are some great family neighborhoods -- I'd recommend two I just mentioned, Culver City and Beverly Hills. Up in the Valley, Studio City and Sherman Oaks are great for families. However, both of those are in the LAUSD, and CC and BH have their own school districts, both of which are excellent.

The assless chaps are quite something, and not what one would expect on a Sunday afternoon when the sun is still up.

That is something that was always weird to me when I lived in CA was that almost city had their own Unified School District (USD) with different rules for each district. Why not just have them joined up into one district? My kids went to schools in Pasadena USD while literally a couple miles down the road there is South Pasadena and San Marino school districts a couple miles west of that. All of which is not very efficient.

They are clean because they don't tolerate the BS like Los Angeles does. What's funny is that BH banned those little scooters in that city. So the company had to set up a type of geo-fence around BH so that scooters can't work there.
