Prince Harry and Meghan to step back as senior royals

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they will step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent.

In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan also said they plan to split their time between the UK and North America.

The BBC understands no other royal - including the Queen or Prince William - was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is "disappointed".

Senior royals are understood to be "hurt" by the announcement.

BIg mood. On the one hand, they are human beings with real emotions, who get hurt, who want a private life, maybe just a smaller life. And Harry never had a choice -- he was born into all of this, and he doesn't seem to like it terribly. On the other hand, she signed up for the job. But I also sympathize with her enormously -- while my situation in no way comes close to what she's going through, I know what it's like to marry into money in the UK, and the kind of expectations that my ex's family had of the kind of wife and mother I would be. I didn't fit in at all -- one of the reasons we ended up settling over here. Putting up with having jabs made at my nationality wasn't very nice, whether they were overgeneralizations of "well, Americans are all like that" or specific cracks made about how I was "so... exuberant" (read: loud/overemotional) or crass or whatever, just really wore me down over time. There's a lot of anti-American sentiment that a lot of people don't admit to -- it can be very subtle but very snide. I get why Meghan AND Harry would say, yeah, but no thanks. He's clearly nuts for her, and she for him. I wish them the best. The monarchy will continue without Harry living full time in the UK.

And then ''oh my... that is one heck of a passive-aggressively terse statement from the Palace.."

 

Well, it is incredibly rude they've done it this way, but honestly good for them. Go where you are happy. If they drop the titles the kid could definitely get citizenship. They can be free from the racism and class-ism. I wonder what jobs they are going to get though?

I think they could run their charities, for one. She's done some writing (at least if you count her old blog) in the past, and the first thing I thought for her was writing children's books for some reason. They'll be fine, and I hope only the best for their little family.

Well DCF is still available but even so they would need to get a move on for it to be CR1 and why would you rush to get that. With his history maybe an extended AP might be expected.

Well, maybe Harry wants to move closer to where his Uncle might eventually be staying for a few years.
