So Does the United States have the market on the term American now? We should let those pesky other North, Central, and South Americans know that.
Well, most of them ARE americans, since mexicans are from the american continent. I am american, south american.

That's playing word games. There's a difference between "American" referring to "Citizen or LPR of the United States of America", and "American" referring to "Resident of the North or South American Continent." A continent is not the same as a country. If I go to another country of North or South America, should I expect to have the same rights as any citizen of that country, simply because I was born on the same land mass?

And if you don't like citizens of the U.S.A. being called "Americans" the way we speak of "Columbians" or "Brazilians" or "Canadians", etc., then what should we be called??

Make no mistake about it, Canadians, Central Americans, and South Americans do not want to be mistaken for being 'american' as in your US of A.

Many of the other posts above are largely reactionary and jingoistic. Hmmm, nothing new there.

The way I see it, the Democrats are offering some kind of pragmatic approach to dealing with all these Mexicans living in your country. How else are you gonna deal with it? Give more power to the redneck 'Minutemen' in Arizona?

Actually my wife is from the Americas ... South Americas (Brazil)

Does your wife's birth certificate indicate "South American," or "Brazilian"?

In any case, when Harry Reid called the illegal aliens "undocumented Americans," he didn't mean simply that they were born on the North or South American Continent. He was attempting to give them a status in this country that they have no right to claim.
