Will somebody please explain to me what an AP is? What does it mean to file for an AP?

Advanced Parole.  It means you can leave and re enter the US at will (within a year).  This only applies to K1.  If you travel without it do not expect to be able to re enter the US.   If you file for it at the time of AOS (adjustment of status) then there is no additional charge.

 

 

It can also mean Administrative Processing.   That is when the consulate puts the visa on hold for more documentation or to do research.  Everyone has an AP period.  For most it is a few days.  For some it can be years.

Not certain if you were trying to say that Advanced Parole is for those adjusting status from a K1 only?

Just wanted to clarify for the OP that it can be applied for by those who entered under certain other visas as well.

You have to marry first and apply for adjustment of status (AOS). So you can file for AP at the same time you are applying for AOS. So to directly answer your question, the fastest you can apply is reliant on how fast you can get married and file AOS.

 

But that is only one aspect of it. Because even though you can file for it relatively fast, AP is taking 3 - 6 months before it is approved. And you can't leave prior to approval.
