   Why do they keep raising the expectation that Iran would hand over the data recorders? Isn't the investigation is normally handled by the country in which the air craft crashes?

 

   Normal protocol would be for Iran to extend an invitation to Boeing personnel to travel to Iran and assist with the investigation on location.

The Iranians do not have the capability, there is a place in France that does and normally you would expect that might be chosen.

    So far they have said they will coordinate the investigation with Ukraine, but neither country has the ability to do that. I suspect it will end up being an international effort, and likely they may end up in France again. I'm not surprised they don't want the US involved.

 

   IIRC, after the Ethiopian airlines crash, they chose Airbus in France to complete the investigation because they didn't trust Boeing to basically investigate themselves.

I cannot confirm the legitimacy of what I'm seeing online but there are posts showing photos of the crash. Nearby there is debris that appears to be from an SA15 SAM....

https://twitter.com/elintnews  has a lot of stuff ongoing. they've retweeted some of the images from other sources I've found elsewhere. there is some debate about how to identify if the location is correct and how it would have brought down the plane. The original photo is in Arabic.

 

Some photos showed what appeared to be 'impact holes', another person believed them just to be rocks.

More photos and analysis this morning seem to back up the theory that something exploded near the aircraft very suddenly. Pentagon sources this morning are telling main outlets that we believe the Iranians did indeed do it, by accident.

 

The question is, what do we do now?

I read that an engine was on fire. However it said it was at 8K and disappeared from radar, which means, according to them, it went almost straight down, which is unusual for an engine fire

There was better evidence they looked at this morning, more photos of the SA15, and pictures of plane damage. It looks like at some point the pilot knew there may have been some danger, and tried turning around. I don't know what the pilot might have known. Was he warned (would they have heard the FAA grounding flights)? Did he see something? Then it was too late, they were in flames and went straight down. 

 

They are currently using a bulldozer on the site...
